When preparing to rescue Vander, Vi tells Mylo, Claggor, and Powder all about the monster that attacked, and the man with one black eye who commanded it. Powder's hands, shaking with nerves, assembles her bomb just a little slower . . . and she arrives at the cannery a little later.
Powder sees a monster pounding on a door -but that's okay, because Vi always chases the monsters away. So Powder sees a man with a black eye, and knows who she needs to send her bomb for.

Darius didn't think; he just acted. He traded his $3,000 silk trench coat to wrap the shivering child. After a week of visiting the hospital every night and realizing the state's foster system was overwhelmed, Darius made a decision that shocked the corporate world. He quit. He filed for emergency kinship/adoption papers, sold the penthouse, and bought a house with a yard in a quiet town called Gravesfield.
The transition to "Dad" was a disaster at first. Darius didn't know how to cook anything that wasn't a five-course meal, and Hunter was a ball of nervous energy who apologized for "taking up space."

Summary

In a universe two steps from canon, the Arcane Herald exists as a patron god of Zaun. At age 8, Jayce encountered this god, changing the course of his life. At age 14, he is discovered by the Herald’s order and told he’s the god’s Chosen, his mortal consort. At age 18, Jayce is sent to live in the Commune, the heart of the Herald’s order, to ascend to his destined status.

Vander sighed and rubbed his temple, his old partner could be so stubborn, "Silco, what good is an independent nation if everyone there is either an addict, a criminal, a cripple or an orphan?" He said, listing his grievances with his fingers, "You want your revolution, I want to ensure we can pass something better to our children."
At that, the Eye of Zaun raised an inquisitive eyebrow, "So how to do you propose we do that?" He asked, taking a sip of his whiskey.
"We're both smart men, we'll figure something out."
