Wei Ying blinked. “I mean, would you have preferred me to jump in front of him if it had been fatal instead?”
“Wei Ying.”
“Come on, Lan Zhan!” Wei Ying cajoled. “I’ve had far worse, while you were with me. Why are you making such a big deal this time?”
Wei Ying, a line of blood slit across his neck. Wei Ying, unconscious, soaking Lan Wangji’s back with blood as he prayed he made it back to the Cloud Recesses in time. Wei Ying, casually dismissing the cursed necrotic flesh he had invited onto his body. And before, Wei Ying in a hundred other moments Lan Wangji had not been present for.
“Because it was preventable,” he responded.
Or: the first serious injury Wei Ying receives post-canon on a night hunt, and the fall out.

Summary
Is this what friends do? This doesn’t feel like what friends do. Friends don’t carry each other gingerly towards the couch. They don’t dip their heads down-down-down till they’re nearly kissing. They don’t proceed to tug off a shirt, then plant their hands across a landscape of skin that isn’t theirs, even if it’s to break a curse.
Or maybe that’s what friends do. Maybe that’s what Lan Zhan does for friends. Wei Ying finds that he’s too confused, too panicked and tired and exhausted, to figure it out.

Summary
Wei-xiong is saying something agitated and urgent as he presses closer. Lan Wangji is striding along the path like a blank-faced storm cloud until finally the tension within him has gathered such abundance that there is nothing left for it to do but—
Snap.
Lan Wangji makes a sound not unlike a snarl, grabs Wei-xiong by the upper arms, and pins him to the base of Nie Huaisang's tree.
"Do not say one thing and mean another," Lan Wangji says, voice as harsh as Nie Huaisang has ever heard it. (Which is not very harsh at all, really. The slightest lowering, the smallest rasp, but it makes all the difference coming from a person who typically does not modulate.)
"Ah," sighs Wei-xiong. "Ah, Lan Zhan. I'm... not, this time. Saying one thing and meaning another. I'm really, really not. I'm sorry, hah, I know you hate me, but I, Lan Zhan, I want... I want."
Lan Wangji—
Oh, wow.
That's a— that is certainly a kiss. Hard and fast and bruising. Porn does not prepare one for anything. Wow.

Summary
Wei Wuxian hadn’t been avoiding Lan Wangji for years, but he hadn’t been not-avoiding Lan Wangji either. There was something awful and awkward about seeing your intended spouse after turning them down that Wei Wuxian just didn’t want to deal with. It helped that he went away for university, and that Lan Wangji went away for university, and they happened to both go to different countries. Wei Wuxian liked to think they both wanted to get as far away from the situation as possible.
(the situation being each other)
So why, then, does Wei Wuxian’s heart skip a beat every time he sees Lan Wangji? And why is adult Lan Wangji so hot? It’s not fair that they could be married and instead Wei Wuxian is awkwardly pining for his former betrothed, a boy he once publicly broke it off with without regret.
