Easy, and smooth, and simple, like it took nothing to say and could just as easily be whisked away from her. He meant it, of course. But you know, not like that. The smirk was gone and in its stead was a bitten lip and an expression she was none too keen to see in the mirror. The kind he’d narrow his brow and raise the ends of his mouth at and she’d say, “what?” and he’d reply, “nothing,” and he’d just continue smiling. Like you don’t love that. Her paw traced over the edge of the button, its plastic cheap and familiar and perennial. One more time and then you’re being weird. Like being weird was the worst of her troubles."
