Summary
He sees the moment it clicks in Bob’s head, because his eyes go wide and he looks at John like he’s just realised something important. It’s an innocence and brightness that he hasn’t seen from Bob before, but it drowns out all the heaviness he carries with him.
“You— you hit my dad with your shield,” Bob says, almost in awe.
“Yeah,” John recalls idly, the sensation of his shield crushing dream-bones and flesh. “Uh, felt like he deserved it.”
The look Bob is giving him now is nothing short of pure wonder, like John’s the miracle here, that dopey smile again; the upward lilt of his mouth. There’s an errant curl brushing over his forehead, the tips of it resting on the tops of his cheekbone. It makes John feel oddly, like noticing something he wouldn’t have ever picked up on before.
His smile is even more disarming than before. Like John’s staring straight into the sun, defenceless.

Bob couldn't be called a romantic guy. His relationships had never been anything like that, all about using and, above all, being used.
Along the lines of "I'll give you a blowjob if you give me a fix and a place to sleep."
But then John came along, and Bob had never felt so loved in his life.
The little bouquets of flowers that arrived at the tower every time he was away on a mission and missed him, the way he took care of him, the way he cooked his comfort food when he needed it, or helped him with his medications, and all those pills all together seemed like an insurmountable obstacle.
Every day with John felt like Valentine's Day.
