Lan Wangji has always considered himself to be above worldly desires. He's not blinded by lust like most other alphas of his age. He does not lose his composure whenever he's in close vicinity of an omega. He does not let his temper get the better of him under any circumstances. Even at the age of sixteen, he displays remarkable self-control, choosing to focus on his studies rather than being obsessed with the pleasures of the flesh.
That changes when Wei Wuxian goes into heat while they're alone in the library.
