Steve takes the smallest of sips from the glass, swallowing slowly before he sets the glass to rest on his leg. “You wanted to know the reason right?” Dustin nods and Steve repeats the motion. “Ok then, well, you see, nothing comes from nothing. Everything is a trade, a deal. So take a guy like me, what do I want?” Steve pauses, breathes out a sigh that sounds almost wistful, like this is the first time he’s really thinking about all of this, even though Dustin knows that has to be a lie. But Steve just smiles, savors another sip. “I have all the material things a person could want. But let’s say I want more than that--”
“We sold our souls to the devil,” Billy cuts in.
Steve balls his hand into a fist, closes his eyes and snarls out a sound of frustration, like he doesn’t know if he’s angry or disappointed, “Fuck, Billy, I was trying to build a fucking moment.”
(Or: Just think Bonnie and Clyde, if they were, you know, two gay satanic teenagers who sold their souls to the devil to take down a clandestine government lab--that old chestnut).

It had been 4 weeks, 3 days and 27 minutes since his father last hit him—3 weeks, 3 days and 16 minutes longer than any reprieve between beatings from his father had ever lasted before. Something was wrong. Billy could feel it building in the thick air between them. His body pulsed under the tension, anxiety and fear and apprehension all pooling together in his gut; he needed it to break. So Billy did the only thing he could do and goes looking for a fight.
He finds something else.

Steve kept his eyes fixed to Billy’s face, peripherally clocking the persistent flex of his futile attempts at a fist before Billy winces from the effort and stills, body going taught and aggressive.
“What are you going to do, hit me?” Steve taunts, a bit childish, sure, but still cruel—satisfying. Especially with the way Billy flinches, just before his eyes flash, chest expanding another inch in that way of his that’s all show. At least when he’s like this, utterly impotent in all ways but one. “Yeah,” Steve grins, a little manic, but it’s warranted, “I didn’t think so. Looks like someone finally put a muzzle on you.”
(Or: Billy breaks both his hands (courtesy of Neil) and can’t manage to masturbate in his current condition. Steve notices and lends him a hand, or rather a leg. The whole tableau was too weird: to have Billy Hargrove, the Trash King of Hawkins, crying on the checkered tile of his kitchen floor.
Steve hesitated, unsure if he should maybe try to offer some kind of comfort. But before he could follow through, Billy tipped suddenly forward, fingers curling into the fabric of Steve’s pant leg, the smudged stains on his cheeks landing to press somewhere around Steve’s knees.
“Look, man,” Steve tried, “you don’t look so good. Do you maybe need an ambulance or something?” Steve reached behind him for the phone but stopped when Billy finally spoke, voice a raw mix of wet gravel that sounded distressingly like the discordant high notes of fear. It’s unsettling, to hear Hargrove without mirth or menace; to hear him scared.
“Please,” Billy said, still too raw, like a wet wound, catching in his throat. “Please, Harrington-Steve.
I need you to kill me.”(Or: an “out damn spot” fic where post-flayed Billy has blood on his hands and Steve helps him get clean).

“What’s your name?” Steve tries, his grip on Bucky’s throat loosening and even turning into a gentle stroke like Bucky needs to swallow something. And just like that, Bucky wants to tell him everything. To admit that despite his upbringing in the R-12, he speaks City just fine. That the drugs he’s just tongue fed a stranger in a club are stolen from Alexander Pierce’s private stash and Bucky has no idea what they are about to do. That he's always been trapped and the clock is rapidly ticking down.
It's a bad idea. To let this stranger into his world. But there’s just something about the way Steve’s eyes shine brighter than the ultraviolet LED strips lining the floor that makes Steve seem both other-worldly and solid. Bucky’s whole world narrows—throbs. The stranger—Steve—is just the kind of wholesome and wholesale danger Bucky lives for.
(Or: a NeonNoir AU in which Bucky is the irresponsible stepson of the head of The City's criminal underground and Steve is a bouncer at a strip club who really should have just thrown Bucky's albeit perfect ass to the curb, only he can't say no to a goddamn damsel in distress).
