Ink desperately wants a soulmark. He wishes he had that little sign of existence, a tiny mark on your chest to signal that there was someone out there who would impact you so much it went soul-deep. But no soulless being has ever had a mark across the entire multiverse, much like how no one with a soul has ever managed to lose theirs. He doesn't care. There's no point in not trying, right?

After a close call with Dream almost discovering Ink's lack of a mark, and by extension his soullessness, Ink decides to give himself a soulmark. It doesn't go well.

Roy shoved his hands into his pants pockets and wandered over to join her.
“This is Ed. He took a dip into the river the other day, and here we are,” he said, and his mother turned to regard him with one of those looks he had never, and probably would never, be able to decipher.
Despite her open and well-deserved distaste for them, that woman was a politician at heart.
