The spell seemed to break the Narrator out of his silence, though. “There it is again. The coughing. Totally unnatural in this setting, Stanley. There’s not even enough dust to irritate the average human lung – I needn’t check, I just know. Stanley, you can’t actually be...” Stanley heard a great deal of shuffling, like gathering papers and flipping through them furiously. The Narrator sounded odd. His voice was cresting near something, but Stanley couldn’t focus on it long enough to understand what.
“Sick? You can’t be sick, Stanley. It’s not possible. You can’t eat. You-you can’t excrete. You can’t get tired. This is how it’s been – how it’s always been.”

The Narrator and Stanley have a row. Emotions are high. Perhaps someone dies in the shuffle, but it's not as though that matters. That's the purpose of resets, after all. They erase all damage ever made.
Until they don't.
Stanley gets sick. This is not something the Narrator is equipped to handle.

You aren’t allowed to stop, aren’t allowed to relax, you need to keep working for your food and your place here and your chance at home.
You cannot die, you know that, on a logical level. Can’t let all the work you’ve put into just being here go to waste. But sometimes, you forget. Forget that you’re supposed to stay alive, for everyone else’s sake. And you don’t move out of the way quick enough.

Hayashi Mai’s hair is free of knots, somehow perfectly untangled in an environment where it most likely should be. Shigeki’s hair is rooted dark, wildly splitting into uneven ends unfit for an Olympian like him. Hasegawa’s soft waves are matted. Ruiko and Masanari are lucky to have Nakamigawa. Or were, right before his fingers itched for a push on a stairwell, and it all went to shit.
‘...You…Killed him.’
‘Wasn’t on purpose, but I don’t regret it. Just got carried away.’
‘...Yo–You’re incredible…! You’re incredible– I, I– I could never– I mean– How are you so strong?’
He looks at the bottom of the pool, and her hair is matted, flowing gently with the imaginary breeze of water and chlorine. Blood draws itself from her impaled stomach, morphing to mirror what once was the fatal wound implanted against Sasaki Hitomi. Hitomi is rotting in the cold lockers, no longer functional. So are Isono Miki, Harada Keizou, Chiba Airi, Okazaki Hanano, Kamimura Kazutoshi, Tsuno Manami, Watari Nishino, and Hama Ran.
Ojima Takeshi understands.

The paper he paints on is too thin, rivalling the rice paper Nakamigawa claims to have seen in the storage room when, once again, scouting numbing creams for the unrelenting purple blemishes Yanagi Shigeki cast upon his previously pristine skin.
“um…Then she decided…” Chiba began, Hama acting as no more than a mere bodyguard as she spoke, playing the public figure. He thinks of his father, then he wishes to forget. Her pigtails bounce around as she walks in circles, brainstorming for a second too long while taking good guesses about how her story would continue. She is an enabler, for his eyes blur and he feels himself almost gone before she speaks again. “...’ I think I have to climb to the top of the hill if I wanna see what’s going on on the other side.”
Ojima Takeshi is Alice, and he is stuck in Wonderland.
