“I’m serious.” She shoved the magazine at her. “This—this thing is everywhere. People were staring at me all morning, and now I know why. They think—” Her voice pitched up, incredulous. “They think I’m dating Phainon!”
Tribbie didn’t look near as scandalized as Stelle expected. Actually, she didn’t look scandalized at all. In fact, a smile creeped onto her face, the kind that suggested amusement rather than shock.
“Oh, is that all?”
“All?!” Stelle’s eyes went wide. “This is a disaster!”
Tribbie scratched the back of her head before managing a shrug.
“Little Gray,” she said at last, voice calm and annoyingly gentle, “it’s okay to have feelings for Phainon. That’s nothing to be ashamed of. We support you.”
For a full three seconds, Stelle’s brain refused to process the words. They just bounced around uselessly, echoing in her skull like badly thrown marbles.
Then her whole body jolted as the meaning sank in.

Phainon roared inside his own mind. “You won’t lay a hand on her again. You hear me? I’ll kill you with my own damn spine if you so much as breathe near her wrong–”
“Oh, spare me the martyrdom. You had her within reach. All those late nights, all those chances. And you…you froze. Always so noble. So scared.” Irontomb’s voice turned mocking. "‘She deserves better,’ right? Well, now she’s getting what she wants.”
“You…?” Phainon’s voice was jagged, shaking. “You’re a monster.”
“And you’re a coward in love,” Irontomb snapped, tone turning cruel. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep her warm at night. I’ll use your hands to hold her, your mouth to tell her every soft thing she aches to hear. And when she finally moans your name – oh, forgive me – our name into the dark?” He laughed. “You’ll feel it.”

It’s the last day before the next cycle begins. The last day before Phainon takes off the mantle of Deliverer. The last day before Stelle steps into the role of Deliverer for Amphoreus. One last day before the cogs of fate begin to turn another way.
Despite this, they are still humans—despite being a vessel for a Stellaron and being a mere variable in a twisted experiment. Joy, sadness, and anger are mere portions of the human experience. Resilience, stubbornness, and vulnerability are such parts too. And so is yearning and hope.
Being characters for some experiment or story won’t prevent them from experiencing the full spectrum of the human experience—no matter how short their time together is.

Phainon was the first person you ran into, the way he stole your baseball bat initially made you fear him. You come to enjoy looking into his blue eyes.
