Summary
A grieving Bilbo returns to Hobbiton to plant his acorn in the gardens of Bag End, which births a little boy. As the years pass, Bilbo and his son live quietly, if not peacefully, in their home until news comes of mysterious black riders in the Shire. Riders that only say two words: Shire and Baggins. Forced to flee in exile, Bilbo reluctantly takes Frodo across Middle-earth, searching for answers as he is chased by agents of the Shadow, unaware of the value of the little gold ring he carries with him.
What Bilbo also doesn't know however is that far to the East, in the Lonely Mountain, someone he'd believed gone to him forever is not as lost as he thought.

“Why, I remember you once tried to steal the pipe right out of my pocket,” Gandalf said with fond amusement.
Oh, now that just wouldn’t do. If the wizard was going to bring up the old days, he could at least tell the stories correctly. Bilbo’s pride would accept nothing else. “And I quite succeeded, as you damn well know,” he said haughtily. “It’s hardly my fault you can’t go a minute without it and were already trying to pull it out again before I could leave the room!”
The wizard’s only response to this was a neutral hum.
“Wait,” said Thorin, holding up a hand. “So are you a burglar, or aren’t you?”
“I’m retired is what I am!” Bilbo snapped. “And I have no intention of getting back in the business, certainly not for this mad quest that is going to get everyone on it killed!”

Summary
When the King Under The Mountain falls ill with a mysterious illness many are called to try to heal the King.
From men to elves none have been succesfull
With the King getting worse as the days go on the dwarves call upon the Grey Wizard who promises to bring one who he believes has a chance to save the King.
And that would be a hobbit underground in the comforts of the Shire
Bilbo Baggins is the hobbit, a soul who has fixed and cured many, mastering the medical arts of many races.

“Bilbo Baggins!” the raven cried as it shuffled its feet and turned its head to look at him with one eye. “Bilbo Baggins of the Shire!”
“Yes, yes,” Bilbo told it as he got to his feet and looked around before gesturing at the bird to lower its voice. “You found me. Do you have a message for me?”
“The curse is worse!” The bird cried. “It is spreading! I fear that we shall all perish this year without your aid! To Erebor! To Erebor!”
Or the one where Erebor never fell but Bilbo still ends up there because Smaug curses the land. He's called in to use his magic to help heal it and meets Thorin. Though neither of them are exactly pleased by their first meeting, they do become friends. As Bilbo works his magic, he finds that the land is not the only thing he's there to heal.

At the end of Battle of the Five Armies, Bilbo returns to the Shire, convinced that Thorin is dead. Meanwhile, Thorin recovers from his injuries only to find that his hobbit has apparently left him, not that he deserves any less after what he did. In their loneliness, both of them turn to the secret ways of their people...
