Summary
Thomas did his best not to show an interest in the conversation, despite the fact that such an uncharacteristic personal revelation from Little was, for reasons the steward would be hard-pressed to explain, strangely tantalizing.
“Oh! How interesting!” replied Hodgson, unknowingly giving voice to Thomas’ curious delight. “Am I right to presume you’re quite fluent in the native tongue? It certainly didn’t come as easy to me in my school days as French, I must admit."

Summary
“Might I ask, is this for a relation, Sir? Or is it--”
“It’s a gift,” Edward replied clumsily. A gift for...someone very special.”
The shop girl beamed. “What a wonderful choice of a gift, Commander.”
Edward idly wondered if she had read any Austen--perhaps she now imagined herself as some sisterly ally to a real-life Anne Elliot, set to enjoy this secret token of affection, with himself cast as Captain Wentworth in this charade.

Summary
"How dare you, Sir? How dare you take such liberties with an innocent, young thing like me?" he pleaded with indignation.
Edward couldn't help but grin. It seemed Thomas had a skill for amateur theatrics.
"Quite easily, I'll admit, when the object of my desire appears more than willing." He paused, further drinking in the vision that had dropped into his lap, "Something makes me suspect you are far from an innocent, my dear."

Summary
He looked pained that Oswald couldn't remember even that. "Edward. You call me Ed."
Oswald nodded. It was a surprisingly simple name, not what he would have guessed. "And how are we...what I mean to say is..." He licked his lips, which were still painfully dry. "Are you my partner?"
Ed let out a breath, possibly in relief. "I suppose that's one way to put it. I mean, not officially, not on paper. Publicly, I work for you." He added the last sentence almost as an afterthought.
"Oh," was all Oswald could manage. He couldn't remember a single moment that they had spent together outside the hospital room, but it sounded right enough.

Summary
“You ought to get some rest, Mister Jopson.”
He really is not sure what Lieutenant Little wants from him, if it is not this: a hand shoved down each other’s trousers or a body prone for taking, bent over a desk or a cupboard. That is generally what a man like him seeks in a man like Thomas.
“I’ve work to do yet,” he returns, softly.a.k.a. Early in 1846, Thomas Jopson falls in love despite his better judgement.
