Stevie nodded slowly, taking in her words and seeming to mull them over. Her gaze burned Eddie’s skin, branded her, and she didn’t dare move until she heard Stevie’s response.

It starts as a joke.
The kids, they’re little shits, who make fun of him on the daily but he loves enough to take them to school and help with their homework. Drives them places when it's raining or cold or they can’t be bothered to bike and packs them lunches when he knows their parents have forgotten. Let’s them sleep in his house when those same parents are out of town, or when Joyce is at work and they can’t all sleep there, and the Wheelers are sick of all the kids spending days and days and days in the basement and like he said it started as a joke.
A comment here and there about him being a babysitter, how far he’s fallen from King Steve to become an unpaid childminder, a joke that isn’t quite a joke after the tenth time. Then when he really falls into the roll, somewhere between the first experience of the upside down and the third, when not knowing when they are, if they’re okay, made his chest tight and his breath shorten until he can get ahold of at least three of them.
Somewhere between there being just four of them to Eleven coming back and Max joining the group they start calling him mom.

He imagined the looks on their faces if he told them, the brightening of their features at the prospect of another queer member of the group then squashed by the clarification that he wasn’t all the way gay. He wondered if they’d laugh, call him silly for thinking that was relevant, that he’d still one day marry a woman so it didn’t matter.
Or maybe they’d be angry at him for wasting their time. He could see the betrayal on Eddie’s face, thinking Steve’s feelings for him were some kind of joke. He could envision the trust between them vanishing all because he decided to open his mouth. They might, he thought, close off completely for daring to compare himself to them. Nothing was worth that.
The weekend after he realized he was bisexual, he kept his mouth shut.

“I should be getting home,” Steve murmurs, even though he knows he doesn’t need to be home. His parents aren’t there, and even if they were, they wouldn’t pay him any attention.
Him starting his own shop was a hopeful shout at his father for the man to be proud of him. The only reaction he got was his father criticizing his choice of it being a flower shop. Steve hasn’t spoken to his father much since then.
Eddie rubs the back of his neck. “Yeah, same here…You better drive safe, though.” Eddie looks at him pointedly when he says that. Steve smiles, “I will. You gotta promise to do the same, though.” He holds out his left pinky.
Eddie looks at him with the fondest smile.
Their pinkies lock, and Steve feels a bit fuzzy on the inside.

Lucas is the man of the group, he knows this. He's got to be the man, like Steve, and wear polos and khakis and come between evil and the weak and be a lady killer and a charming, funny, sweet guy. Like Steve who has started hanging out with Eddie Munson and getting piercings and wearing eyeliner and not being the man Lucas thought he was.
“Steve is that an earring?” says Dustin, at one of his highest pitches, slap bang in the middle of one of Eddie’s tirades.
Everyone pauses. Number one, you never interrupt Eddie, especially not during D&D. Number two, what? (Lucas has strong suspicions he can’t let Max ever find out about this, or she’s going to break-up with him and become a full-time Steve admirer.)
They all lean forwards.
Steve shifts slightly uncomfortably, but he looks amused. “Yeah.” He shrugs. And there it is, a single tiny silver hoop in his left ear. Lucas stares, amazed.
“You’re a guy,” says Lucas, without thinking about it.
Steve only laughs. “I am aware, Lucas, thank you.”
