Summary
Hua Cheng tells Xie Lian the tale of 'The (Handsome, Xie Lian wants it noted) Soldier and the Stolen Bride' and entices him into playing a little game of hide and seek. Xie Lian must locate the real Hua Cheng within the group of identical shells in order to win. With three Hua Chengs to choose from, what could possibly go wrong?

Xie Lian bursts with a bout of knowing laughter at that, slapping his hands over his mouth when Hua Cheng sighs, dramatically forlorn, his shoulders dropping in dejection. “Gege’s not taking my story seriously.”
“I am! I swear it! Please, San Lang, do continue,” His Highness begs, reaching across the table to hold Hua Cheng’s hand, squeezing it in unnecessary apology as he gives him a bright and encouraging smile.
Satisfied, Hua Cheng settles back, taking Xie Lian’s hand with him, forcing his flustered husband to hastily and clumsily crawl over to his side of the table along with it.

“Hello?” Hua Cheng looks at the small, curly child and can’t suppress a smile.
“Noods.” The kid says, voice quiet but sure.
“Okay.” Hua Cheng lets out a laugh.

“Hua-chengzhu is the kindest person I can think of.”
“Oh? Are you so sure about that?”
“My mother agrees too,” she says with surety and assurance unbefitting a girl her age. “If not for Hua-chengzhu, we would’ve been worse than dead, I’m sure. If not for Hua-chengzhu, my father would’ve killed my mother eventually and I’m sure he’d come for me, too. He never did like me. I’m not his real daughter, after all.”
Ah. So it’s like that, then. Hua Cheng remembers his own eleventh birthday: his father had chased him around the house, pinned him down, and tried to gouge his red eye out with a knife.
Little kids have such a brutal honesty to them. Hua Cheng tries and fails to be unmoved by it.
