Summary
Legend says that long, long ago, the Colony was left on the brink of destruction. It was in this dark hour, that the eye of a kind and solitary God-Machine fell upon the slugcats of the Colony, and took pity on them. It allowed them into its home, its paradise-like Godlands, where it sheltered them from the worst predators and gave them many gifts of knowledge. It asked for little in exchange, and in the caring shadow of their God-Machine the Colony prospered.
Then God died. Then the predators returned, and the land itself turned hostile. And when the Colony knew the corpse of their once-God could shelter them no longer, they left to find a new God-Machine to care for them.
The Migration, fraught with danger and loss, took many generations. But finally, the horizon reveals the great metal body of a new God-Machine. The Colony's Elders have elected five to parley with the new God. They will secure a new future for the Colony, or the rest of their fellows will surely perish with time.
They will not find the new Godlands so welcoming.
