Summary
Vaatu remembered their first dance.
It was nothing like the dances humans knew, and the music they had followed was nothing humans could hear.
She still remembered the patterns winding through the cosmos with his other half, the light that dotted the stars and celestial bodies while he was the velvet void between. Two parts of a mechanism born from the universe itself.
--
Vaatu recalls hers and Raava's first cosmic dance. Raava chooses to dance with a human.

Summary
Vaatu gave a small chuckle. "Chaos was never dependent on my freedom. I am a conduit, an embodiment of the concept - but I do not control it alone. I can influence it, but it will always exist, always free to do what it likes. The chaos that Wan dealt with came from humans expanding outwards from their Lion Turtles. They will always fight and conflict with each other. Personally, I think they could stand to learn how to resolve their own issues."
"So what? You think the world doesn't need me?" Korra frowned at the older spirit, raising an eyebrow.
"My point is not that your deeds are meaningless, only that you don't need to concern yourself with every human conflict that passes within your sight. What needs you will find you, and in the meantime, humans will live on."
--
Or, two years after being poisoned, Korra sets out to find herself. She's joined by a familiar dark spirit, who survived Harmonic Convergence instead of being purified.

Summary
Vaatu flattened the ears on the sides of her head. "I have something Unalaq wants."
"And that is?"
"My power. My abilities. He has agreed to free me, in exchange for something. I will be released from this prison either way, but under his terms, the outcome will be torturous for every human and spirit in this realm."
--
Harmonic Convergence comes and Vaatu lives, but at a severe cost.

Summary
It occurred to Wan that if Vaatu were to snap his teeth shut, he might actually be able to crush his shoulder. The power he was holding back was immense, almost frightening. Vaatu would never harm him that way on purpose, he knew, but if he were to send him over the edge a little too quickly, he might lose control.
---
Or, Wan discovers a liking for Vaatu's teeth.

Summary
How strange, this was. Being human, Raava didn’t have the same physical sense of lightness that she did in her true form. Of course she didn’t - she was built to fly. Humans were not.
And yet, she felt lighter.
She could pretend, for a moment, for this rest in the journey, this space between time, that she was not the spirit of peace at all.
---
Or, on their journey, Raava takes on a human form. Hijinks ensue, but she also discovers something about herself and what she wants.

Summary
“Why was that other spirit tormenting you?”
“She thinks the same as the humans.”
The little human frowned. “Is she going to keep looking for you?”
“Almost certainly. She wants me under her control.” Vaatu dropped to the ground, the frills along his sides flaring out. “She is the embodiment of peace - or so she says. You humans would say that’s a good thing - but too much peace leads to oppression. And that’s exactly what she seeks to do to me. Her era has lasted far too long, have you not noticed oppression yourself, in the name of quelling chaos?”
The human looked…thoughtful. “Yeah. I have.” He looked up to meet Vaatu’s gaze. “Oh. I’m Wan, by the way.”
--
Or, Wan frees Vaatu from Raava's grasp. It doesn't go as badly as everyone thought it would.

Summary
Vaatu thought it would be simple.
Save the child, use him to gain his freedom, and spread his regained darkness to swallow the world whole.
The world decided that that was not the role he would play.

A rewrite of my old fic "My Dad's the Spirit of Darkness" with hopefully better writing!

Summary
Vaatu saved Zuko when he was a baby, giving him the ability of firebending that he was born without.
When Zuko was thirteen, Ozai realizes that it wasn’t Agni he was blessed by-and the dark spirit that saved him instead has been with him this entire time. One horrible exorcism later, Zuko, Vaatu, and Iroh are banished-and have a new resolve to end the war that has raged for one hundred years.
I'm not great at summaries.
(EDIT: this fic has been abandoned. I am currently rewriting it, though, so the story won't be gone and I'll hopefully finish it first!)
