When indentured servant Ash makes a mistake during what should be a routine armor repair, he thinks the adventurers will take their pound of flesh as payback. Everyone knows, after all, they can't be stopped. Stronger, faster, and armed with magic, nobody is willing to step in an adventurers way when they're angry. Instead, they barter for his life's contract. If life is already as painful as it is at the blacksmith's, surely being owned by a group of super humans will be much, much worse?
Lydia wants to help the kid working at the smith's, but it's hard to do that when he's a stiff breeze away from fainting in terror at all times around her. And, admittedly, the idea of having somebody else to handle her cleaning is appealing. Surely it wasn't a mistake to buy the kid in front of him?

Both she loved, in her own way - though, Essek mused as he traced the gilded lettering of his dinner invitation, it was a peculiar sort of love. He couldn’t help feeling there was something missing in the flinch behind his mother’s eyes when she looked at him, how she rose to the occasion in public but did everything she could to pretend he was a ghost behind closed doors.

To be bartered off as—as a diplomatic representative of all things. It was absurd, insulting. Was the prestige his accomplishments brought to the den not enough? The Bright Queen herself had awarded him the title of Shadowhand for the advancements he’d made to the field of dunamancy, advancements that had secured countless victories in the war. Why should he have to upend his entire life to accommodate some human he’d never even met?
