Zuko suddenly felt his skin heat with white-hot rage. It was a miracle from Agni that flames did not instantly burst from his fingertips as he clutched the table before him, knuckles white. “Excuse me?! You dare place guards before my room, to keep my Fire Lady from exiting?!” He yelled, uncaring if anybody in the other room heard him lash out now. “You had better have a very, very good reason for this, Zhaoran.”
Zhaoran’s expression flickered, obviously offended when Zuko left out his title of High Sage, but at this moment Zuko did not care for respect. The fact that the elder was sitting here unburned was all the respect Zuko could offer through his anger.
“Fire Lord Zuko, today doesn’t just mark your fifth year of union with Fire Lady Katara, but it is also the Day of Black Sun.”

It paused its motion. Katara looked up curiously but Zuko urged her to keep her face hidden against his chest, his hand warm through her hair. The monster continued, “How long do you plan to linger here?”
Some people take a wrong turn in this world and find themselves unable to return, lost on the far side of the veil. Katara learns that some people don’t end up there by accident.

At the funeral, Katara doesn’t dress in white. It causes a scandal or would do if her belly wasn’t round with the Fire Nation’s future. She doesn’t look away from the pyre, not even when the prayers tapper out, smoke rises, and the Firelord’s crown is placed in her top knot.
She kneels to receive Zuko’s crown and his child kicks, blissfully ignorant within her.
She wears black and navy robes, charcoal smeared over her eyes and forehead so that when she finally— finally— is out of the public eye and can burst into tears, she tastes salt and fire as the charcoal paste runs over her lips and stains her tongue.

Having come back to the Institute in the middle of a patrol to find out that Valentine had invaded her home and killed so many innocent lives, she wants to go down to the cells herself and stab the man, orders be damned. She lets out a shuddering breath as she looks at the bodies around her searching for any possible survivors.
There’s only so many times she can press her fingers to a throat and find no pulse.
