Hours later, when everything was well and truly fucked, Bucky would recognize the exact moment when he should have benched himself. It had happened in the dazed split-second between Sam flashing him a smile as he swan-dived out of the plane and Bucky almost leaping right after him, his parachute lying forgotten on the floor.

“Only with the things he was especially taken with,” Sarah says. A smirk plays at the corner of her mouth. “He was very taken with the Howlies.”
Sarah fits a lot of meaning in the way she says taken, and Bucky gets it. “Gabe?”
“Was one of his personal heroes.” Sarah pauses and eyes Bucky meaningfully. “But Sam didn’t have an enormous schoolboy crush on Gabe Jones.”

Summary
Whenever Bucky fell ill in the past, he dealt with it. During the war, a soldier couldn't afford a sick day. He pushed through it. If it got bad enough, he could spend a day in the med bay surrounded by dying soldiers before he had to get his ass up again but no more than that.
As the Winter Soldier, it was unacceptable. They dosed him up with enough drugs so it dulled the pain and eased the lethargy. Anything to keep him on his feet. The brainwashing did the rest.
He's never been taken care of before. Not since he was a kid. That was the thought that ran through his swaying head as he listened to Sam Wilson humming while he made soup.
