Mer hatchlings are very needy, one hatchling needs the devoted attention of two adults to grow into a healthy adult. In the case of multiple births, most mer parents will give the other child to another set of adults who do not themselves have any young children. When no adoptive parents are available, however, a mer may decide to leave one of the children by the shore to be found by humans, where the hatchling will assume a human form as a natural survival mechanism.
