Summary
Katherine should’ve been a teacher! She had been a teacher, and she’d loved it! That is, until she’d gotten let go of due to budget cuts. That had resulted in her moving back to the city, which hadn’t been high on her list of things to do. She’d loved the small-town lifestyle. Out in nature, fresh air and no rifts tearing holes in the ground or monsters appearing out of the blue.
Yeah, those were real problems in the city.
Yet if she hadn't moved back, hadn't been let go of, hadn't been so distracted planning out in vivid detail the pity party she would throw for herself when she got back to her cramped studio apartment, then she wouldn't have taken the wrong turn. Wouldn't have managed to be in just the wrong place at just the right time.
Tumbled through a rift, crashed into a flooded tunnel, and met the love of her life.Ok ok, back it up. We're getting ahead of things. Shelby. A wrong turn in the right place, and she'd met Shelby. So maybe it had all been worth it, after all.
{In which Katherine wants several pints of ice cream, Shelby isn't picking up social cues, no one had been planning to go for a swim, and a flower can be beautiful even if it blooms in the shadows}

Summary
“For someone who claims not to like thinking,” Edwin says, raising an eyebrow, “you do a remarkably good job of it.”
Charles laughs. “Tell that to my old teachers, mate.”
“If they disagree, then they can’t be very qualified.” Edwin says this simply, like it’s just a fact of life. Like it’s plainly obvious that if anyone thinks Charles is stupid, it’s they who are at fault.
Or: Charles grew up poor and is likely to stay that away, his job at the magic store notwithstanding. By the time he meets Edwin, he's decided that he wants a new life. In between figuring out what's up with the mysterious wish-granting pigeons, and whether he can go to the Royal Ball, Edwin makes him want to take a chance on being happy as well.
