Henry was probably tearing off somewhere - hunting wolves for fun, or challenging bandits to fistfights, like a madman. Hans would just have to go back to the Den. That was all Hans was good for anyway - sitting alone, waiting for Henry to come back to him. Eventually Henry would come home from whatever mission or fit of madness had pulled him away. And Hans would gratefully accept however many minutes or hours Henry could spare for him before he went wandering off again, like a poorly trained dog.
Or: all they want is to protect each other, they just don’t always know how.

Shane was rage shopping. He dumped overpriced granola that he wouldn’t even eat into his basket, blood fizzing with frustration, as it had been for days. He kept replaying every single minute of his last morning with Ilya before he left. Ilya, who just got to be an asshole and then fuck off to Florida for a week-long road trip. They wouldn’t see each other for another three weeks, when their off days next lined up, and Shane was still so mad.

Something flickers across Rozanov’s face. His jaw twitches. “Yes, I know about Lily.” He raises his eyebrows.
Hayden feels like a complete asshole, all of a sudden. There’s just been too much going on to even think about Shane’s mystery girlfriend. “Shit, I should probably, like, call her, or something? I don’t know this girl at all, but Shane’s been obsessed with her for years. If she was watching the game, she would have seen him get hurt.”
“You don’t need to call her,” Rozanov says, and when Hayden glances at him, he still looks fucking miserable but now he’s rolling his eyes, a much more familiar expression of disdain on his face. “She’s sitting right here.”
