Despite the rain needling the night and turning the streets into empty veins of water and shadow, Ivan can no longer bear the distance. The storm, the hour, the isolation, none of it matters now. All that matters is Lovro.
He walks through the downpour as if drawn by something stronger than fear, stronger than reason. By the time he reaches Lovro’s door, the city has vanished behind him. There is only the rain on his skin and clothes and the ache in his chest.

It’s your special day, why are you letting me ruin it for you? It's your birthday, for god's sake.
“Did it ever occur to you that I like your company?” Ivan counters, and it’s enough that Lovro has to catch his breath. Something warm filters through his chest, wrapping itself around his heart. “No? Well, there you go.”

Lovro and Ivan sneak away from another event together. It's hard to ignore how different it feels this time.
