    Summary

Xie Lian wasn’t even sure who he was being sacrificed to, this time. In the past, it was almost always shared—overheard before the knife plunged, for example. But tonight, he was on a cold altar, waiting for the eventual end, and had roughly no idea why the mortals were so scared, so nervous, yet so relieved. On the other hand, he had never been granted the sight of something so beautiful before his slaughter—the wings of a silver butterfly danced right over his face, and landed gently on his nose, where blood slowly dripped. Xie Lian thought it was a very precious goodbye. Or apology, maybe. He found that he didn’t mind.

(or: xie lian is sacrificed to one of crimson rain sought flower’s temples. the aftermath is certainly something.)

"“Ah,” Xie Lian blinked, and the tears were still going. “This is so… ah, I’m sorry. This situation isn’t… it’s not very pleasant.” He swallowed thickly. “Thank you—for…” Xie Lian couldn’t even say it. The words got stuck, and he cleared his throat as if it would help him along. “Thank you for untying me. And not—not finishing the—uhm, the…”
    Sacrifice. Ceremony. Slaughter.
Bouncing around in his head, now, raw and blood-stained. Will you take a different knife and press it into my belly, where you just healed? Is fresh blood not worthwhile? Is this your temple? You aren’t a god, you are dead, why do they worship you? Was human sacrifice not what you want? Did you not want this? Did you not want me?
Xie Lian thought his line of questions were—scattered, and highly surreal. Hah. Imagine being wanted. Imagine—truly, and truly imagine it, right now—if anyone would want the Laughingstock of the Three Realms."

Amo a QY!!!

    Summary

Xie Lian bends his head low to whisper to some of the butterflies which have alighted upon his fingers. Hua Cheng smiles to see it; they are, of course, Xie Lian’s to command, just as is their master. The butterflies flap their wings in concert, as if reacting to the feeling of Xie Lian’s breath, and flutter away.

Hua Cheng’s smile disappears as soon as they do. Xie Lian’s hands, no longer obscured by gossamer wings, are scored with strings of red pearls. Blood.

In which Xie Lian figures out what, exactly, inspired Hua Cheng’s wraith butterflies. Neither he nor Hua Cheng take the revelation particularly well.

“Gege, I don’t want you to apologize to me. Not for that—not ever.” The words tear from him, frayed and desperate. [...] “What could I possibly forgive you for?” Why won’t you believe me when I say it was an honor?
“But it was my fault—!” Xie Lian bursts out, face a study in agony.
“No, it wasn’t,” [...] “Bai Wuxiang, that scum—I watched him steal that sword from you to summon the spirits!”
“They would have come anyway!” Xie Lian cries. His hands twine into the hair at his scalp and pull. “There were too many—their resentment was too strong! San Lang, maybe Jun Wu gave me the tools, but I still chose to—”
[...] But in this moment, realization overtakes him so wholly that he can’t even hear whatever self-recriminations Xie Lian is flinging like knives at himself.
“Gege,” Hua Cheng says, suddenly and surreally patient. “You’re right.”
The flip in tone disarms Xie Lian so thoroughly that he stops mid-sentence. [....] “… San Lang?”
“You’re right, gege,” Hua Cheng repeats calmly. [...] “It’s as gege said,” Hua Cheng says, seeking out his husband’s now-limp hands and squeezing. “They would have come anyway. But not so suddenly, and not so fast.” Xie Lian’s face twists, but Hua Cheng doesn’t let him interject again. “You could have had more time to prepare. You could have evacuated the town, or moved away yourself. You could have found a hundred different ways to disperse them, given time. Bai Wuxiang forced your hand—and so he forced mine.”
    “San—!”
“Please, Dianxia.” His voice cracks for the first time. Xie Lian falls silent. “I was so grateful to be able to stop Xianle’s fallen from hurting you. I would have spared you all of them, if I could have. What could those spirits understand of loyalty? They couldn’t handle losing, so they hated the whole world. You, Dianxia, have never wanted anything more than to save it. To save people just like them, no matter how undeserving they were, no matter the cost to yourself.”
Xie Lian’s mouth opens, but whatever escapes it isn’t language. Perhaps it’s another mangled San Lang. Maybe it’s just pure emotion spilling over at Hua Cheng gently, relentlessly laying out the truth.
“Gege knows I’ll never forget the altar. But gege—Lang-er Bay was your triumph just as it was mine.” Xie Lian sucks in a harsh breath, eyes shuttering, but Hua Cheng only waits until he returns his gaze to him. [...] “Xie Lian, Bai Wuxiang did his very best to unmake you, and it didn’t even work.”
[...] “You said it yourself. You made every terrible choice that day all on your own, gege. That means that you pulled yourself together, because of your own strength.”
His voice cracks again. “What could I do but follow your example, after that?”"

    Summary

So. There were three things that Xie Lian was completely sure of even with some of his memories still missing.

    1) He was married to Hua Cheng.

    2) Yin Yu was also married to Hua Cheng.

    3) He Xuan was also married to Hua Cheng.

He had two brother-husbands—that he knew of so far—along with however many other brother-husbands or sister-wives Hua Cheng had in his harem. Oh, let’s not forget that Hua Cheng, devoted believer that he is, only married Xie Lian to better serve and protect his god, not because he was actually in love with him. And that’s fine! It’s…fine.

Maybe if he keeps telling himself that, he'll start to believe it as well.

(Or: Xie Lian accidentally activates an artifact that causes him to lose some of his memories. He jumps to some entirely wrong conclusions because of it.)
