Kate reaches up and tucks a lock of hair behind her ear before picking up the stack of bowls and silverware to make her way over to the kitchen table.
“Katherine Elizabeth.”
“What?” Kate looks over to see her mom standing there with her hands on her hips.
Her mom hasn’t looked at her with such exasperation since Kate was sixteen, and a trip to town to go to the grocery store had turned into Kate disappearing for half the day because she got caught up chasing cloud formations. It hadn’t helped that she’d forgotten her phone. Cathy had been about to call the police when Kate finally returned home, about five hours later than she was expected.
“You told Tyler you’re home, didn’t you?”
No. No she didn’t.

But her face glowed, and he could see the barest hint of a smile. Even if he did not already recognise the stranger as Wednesday’s mother - it wouldn’t have been hard to figure out. Not from the dark, focused eyes or the way that she looked straight through him, and not from her long black dress. Not from her statuesque beauty and similar doll-like features, all pale skin and maroon-painted lips. But from the way that even looking at her made him hurt.
