Get back before dark!” Phil shouts after him. There’s no response, but Phil knows Tommy heard him.
or, The Crafts go to a cabin that Phil's parents owned and decide to spend a few days there. Tommy gets distracted catching bugs in the forest, he doesn't notice the figure watching him that didn't look human.

“Sorry.” As soon as the words left his mouth, Wilbur was frantically shaking his head. “No. You don't need to apologize. We need to apologize. Gods, Tommy. None of this is your fault, it's ours. We're so sorry, Tommy, we should have been paying more attention to you– c-caring more for you–”
“Wilbur,” Tommy stopped him, “please, you're gonna give me a headache,” he said, rubbing his temples.
Wilbur shut up. “Right, right, sorry.” Wilbur sat back down on the plastic chair, but scooted it closer to the bed.

Or, Tommy's family hasn't been close since Kristin's death, it takes Tommy almost dying for them to realize that. Fluffy sbi time!

Tommy hated his brothers and their stupid friends. They left him in the rain to freeze! When he got home, he was gonna go absolutely wild. Not really, he didn't have the courage to do that.
Or, left to freeze in the rain by his brothers, Tommy called the person he barely even talked to. Dream's confused as to why Tommy was calling him so late.
