“I’m the king,” Arthur says grumpily, swallowing around the stone that has settled in his throat, “I can wear what I want.”
“What about what I want?”
“I’m the king,” Arthur repeats slowly, since Merlin is being particularly thick, “and so you can also wear what I want.”
Or, Arthur dresses Merlin, which goes about as well as you would expect.

“I need a fake boyfriend.” Arthur peered up at Merlin. Silence stretched between them. Then, the penny dropped.
“No,” Merlin said. “Absolutely not.”
“Please?”
“No! You’re my best mate, it would be weird.”
“I already told him my boyfriend is a biologist by the name of Marvin who works in a science lab studying animals.”
“I’m touched you modelled your fake boyfriend after me, but I’m a cryptozoologist studying magical creatures. And my name is not Marvin.”
“I’ll tell him he misheard.”Uther wants to see his son married. Arthur doesn't want to marry any of the women he's set up with (or any woman at all). Merlin agrees to a stupid, stupid plan.

He needs to think of something else, something else, come on, Merlin, this isn’t working. He hones in on a man further up ahead leaning against the wall of a bank, staring at his mobile. He’s blonde and his coat looks expensive and that’s apparently enough for Merlin, who beelines for him.
The blonde looks up, startled, as Merlin grabs his arm.
“Pretend I know you,” he says in a rush, knowing he must seem deranged, “this guy is following me.”

Arthur wishes he could climb inside of Merlin’s ribs, let him be held by the soul of his beloved in their final resting place. Here in the cradle of devotion shall he decompose. When they are one with the earth again, let the tombstone lament the piety of a king to his sorcerer.
"Here," it would read, "lies the feeble prince and his titan." Here, among the strewn about bodies of their enemies and the knotted roots of the woods, they would stay.
Or, Merlin is felled by a bandit and Arthur falls apart.

Summary
After Merlin's magic is discovered by Arthur, he understands the king's need for some time apart. But the loss of the king's trust is a bitter pill to swallow, and even more so the loss of his love. Forced to wait until Arthur is willing to deal with him again, Merlin begins to realize that the loss of Arthur's love isn't just emotionally painful, but physical as well. He hasn't been able to breathe without pain since that day in the forest. And his cough is producing flower petals, a sign that something much worse is going on. Merlin isn't stupid, but he without options. There's no cure, and even if there was, it's definitely not pressure he's willing to put on his love. Merlin is content with his decision.

Clearly Arthur agrees, because he frowns in confusion. "I know that we don't speak about it often, but it can't be that shocking."
Elyan frowns. "Don't talk about it often? This entire kingdom does nothing but talk about it. Your father had it outlawed, Arthur."
What?
"Had it outlawed? Really?" Percival asks, and Leon's expression surely mirrors Arthur and Percival's. "I knew it was frowned upon, but I didn't think it was outlawed."
There's a beat of silence, where everyone is looking very confusedly at one another, and Leon is beginning to think that they're not all having the same conversation.

Or, in which Arthur tries to stage an intervention for Merlin, but the Knights can't figure out whether the intervention is about Merlin's magic or his sexuality.
