Will had every mind to walk out into the woods with no shoes on and disappear under mysterious circumstances.
"You want to make a fool out of Mike, don't you," he stated. "Look, I am slightly upset with Mike, but I won't make a fool out of him or humiliate him just to see if he likes me back. Or play into your weird delusions."
"Okay then, we will go and ignore him the whole time. Don't you want to see Holly? She loves you, you know.."
Will raised an eyebrow. "You do know that Mike is oblivious as hell, right?"
"So..what's the harm?"
Will was supposed to be having a good day. So why on earth has he just had his paints destroyed and then being talked into going to five parties with Robin of all people, and just to top it all off, he ends up alone with Mike at every party. Mike. Mike Wheeler. Plus the one time they were alone when there was no party.

Summary
Mike understood then and there that Will wasn't interested in being friends with him anymore, he was replacing him with a new best friend.
“Fine- Yeah go with your new best friend I'm sure you'll have so much fun” Mike scoffed as he turned away to storm off, grabbing his bike from the bike rack and biking away angrily.

Being around Mike constantly makes it harder for Will to get over his feelings, in an attempt to get over him Will starts dating the only other known gay guy at school. Mike gets really jealous and possessive and acts like a complete idiot, the two struggle to navigate the way things are going and Will starts having visions and headaches all the time that turn Mike's protector mode on. It's like the universe is constantly pushing them closer and closer and they can't avoid it.

"No. No, that's not..what happened. We aren't being held hostage, Dustin."
Strangely enough, Mike found that he would rather be held hostage right now if that meant being held hostage with Will, as that was better than being without him.
He pushed the button down. "He's..he's gone. Will's gone."
"Gone?" Dustin repeated, sounding as stressed as Mike was right now. "What do you mean, gone?"
Mike stared at the tree, at the spot where the gate had been..
..."The Upside Down..it took him."
Losing Will was nothing new to Mike, happening more times than he'd be willing to admit, because really you shouldn't be losing a whole human being as often as Mike Wheeler lost Will Byers. Despite losing him once again and everything that came with it, Mike would rather die than leave him in the Upside Down. So what does Mike do? The most logical thing, of course.
He follows Will right into the hell that took him because he would follow Will anywhere.
