He grabs his upper arm. His soul mark feels like it’s humming, buzzing with warmth and spreading it into every nerve.

    That’s not normal.

“Hello there, I haven’t seen a human in this forest in ages.”

    That isn’t either.

Tommy whirls around at the sound of the voice. Standing in the middle of the clearing is a man, or at least something trying to appear as one.

    -
    Or: Tommy is born with the soul mark of a fae. That poses two problems;

    1. He is very much a human.

    2. Fae don't tend to like humans.

    This should be fun.

    “Hello?” Tommy says.

The stranger looks at the frog in Tommy’s hands. “That’s a beautiful Rana temporaria.”

    “I’m sorry, what?”

They grin like they’ve told a joke Tommy doesn’t understand. “Rana temporaria. It’s the scientific name for the common frog.” They gesture to the frog. “It’s got beautiful patterning.”

Tommy looks down at the frog. It’s that weird sort of shade in between green and brown, and there are a few dark splotches scattered across its back. One of them looks a bit like a dick.

He holds the frog out for the stranger to see and smiles. “It’s got cock and balls on its back.”

It just tilts its head, like a sleek predator studying its prey before it eats it. "What's a child like you doing out here?"

"I'm not a child," Tommy shoots, trying to remember everything he knows about the fae in the span of a few seconds. Of course, arguing is probably a terrible idea, but it's also a surefire instinct for the teenager's silver tongue.

    “Can you help me?”

The rain patters on Tommy’s hair, his shoulders, the ground. It touches the man but doesn’t seem to sink in. His clothes look no more than damp when they should be soaking. Tommy should know; his shirt is plastered to him. He wouldn’t be surprised if it was see-through.

Tommy blinks. The man asked him a question. He nods again, not quite trusting his voice. The man seems nice, so Tommy takes a step forward.

The man smiles. It… something is wrong, but Tommy can’t put his finger on it. “Thank you. I’m looking for someone.” The man tilts his head, and something gleams in his brown eyes. With the motion, a strand of wavy hair falls forward, but it all seems so perfect. The man is perfect.

    -------

Or, Tommy is lost, alone and he needs help. Desperately.

    Summary

All the stories warn against going into the woods, warn about creatures hiding there. They say there are lilting voices singing from the shadows, promising glittering daydreams with sharp teeth. They say the creatures there will take you far away to never be seen again.

There was a boy, the village whisperers, safely in the circle of light, glancing over their shoulders at the trees beyond it. There was a boy who strayed too far.

They say you can still hear his laughter as it’s carried on a breeze, bright and wild, like youth frozen in amber, like ghosts falling delicate from the branches.

(Strange things happen to boys who linger too long beyond the veil. Magic infects like a disease, like rot, eating away everything human that lingers, until his eyes are an unbroken summer sky blue and there are flowers in his hair and he sings with a voice that haunts the shadows.)

(Here is our story: A boy goes home.)
