He’s in the middle of tweeting about his little exchange with the cashier when he hears the tell-tail laughter of Eddie Kaspbrak somewhere off in the distance. He looks up from his phone and straight ahead across the shop he sees Eddie talking to someone.
Which would be fine if it weren’t some fucking guy.
The guy is definitely not Eddie’s type, but Richie still feels a not so pleasant fire burning in his chest and a sour taste in his mouth.
Okay so maybe he’s a little jealous, and what about it? You can’t arrest him for that, go away.

He finishes the last of Eddie’s wing himself and drops the bone back into the box, ignoring Eddie’s brief noise of protest. “Take another hit, my God, you’re getting distracted, stop forgetting what you’re doing and smoke up, Johnny.”

He eventually sees them through the cloying haze of body-warm air that’s wrapped itself around the crowd—Richie looks as though he’s attempting to dance with Eddie and force a bit of vodka on him at the same time. Though the bodies around Bill are pressed up tight against one another, everyone’s given the pair a few feet of berth to avoid the thrash of skinny limbs currently engaged in a sort of dance-wrestle. The chatter of his classmates’ voices has melted into an indistinct blanket of noise, but Bill can still make out Richie singing loudly to the music and the shrill tones of an irate Eddie.

“New Year’s Day,” Eddie corrects again.
“New Year’s Day, then,” Richie allows.
There’s another beat of silence before he hears Eddie sigh audibly over the phone line. "I’m thinking about leaving my wife.”
“Why’s that?” Richie asks. He’s already hooked. He genuinely cares about all of his callers and wants to help, but something about Eddie’s got its nails in him. Honestly, he doesn’t mind all that much. It’s a nice change of pace, to feel something.
“We don’t get along all that well,” Eddie tells him. “I… I don’t know. We don’t really have anything in common. She’s sort of controlling, I guess. And I think I might be gay, so—”

Just as the last car is passing them, Prince Charming makes a snuffling noise and Eddie freezes, still pressed on top of him. He’s suddenly aware of every single place they’re touching, and Eddie thanks the brutal Chicago cold - there’s no way he could pop a boner when it’s this freezing. God, he hates himself.
The man opens his eyes for a moment and looks directly into Eddie’s eyes. Eddie’s mouth hangs open. He tries to smile, but he doesn’t think he achieves it. Instead, he swallows and says:
“Merry Christmas.”
The guy passes back out without a word.

“Aw, shucks, you’d really do all that for little ol’ me?” Richie fawns in his best-worst Southern Belle voice.
Eddie is offscreen washing his hands in the kitchen sink when he says “Yeah, dumbass, I have disposable income, and the office can cope without me for like two and a half days.”
“You’re serious?” Richie asks quietly, a little overcome.
“Yeah, man,” Eddie says, stepping back into frame. “Only if you want me to, though, I mean—” His eyebrows come in for a worried landing over his eyes, as they often do, and Richie loves them when they do that but he does not want to miss out on the opportunity to have Eddie in his house instead of on his grainy cell phone screen.
“No, I want you to!” Richie says frantically. “I insist, Eduardo. Come to California.”
Eddie’s smile pops up, just briefly, a flash of white pixels as he looks down at his hands. “Okay,” he says.

Richie feels like he’s going crazy. He’s always operated on a hairpin trigger when it comes to Eddie, but it’s worse now. Eddie breezes into the room and mentions that he got invited to a wedding and looks at Richie like it’s a challenge, and Richie breaks out in a cold sweat. He texts a picture to Richie when Richie is at work of him in a deep navy suit, getting fitted for God knows what, and the caption wouldn’t this be nice for a special occasion? and Richie cracks his phone screen with how fast he tosses the phone to the other side of the room.
Last month, Eddie plopped himself down into their bed, while Richie was putting clothes away in their dresser, and asked point-blank, “Do you ever think about getting married?”
