Kaladin fails to mention he has a baby brother to his closest friends and they find out just before they were to leave for Shadesmar, so they decide to spend one last night with him. But Kaladin is plagued with unwarranted thoughts, and Adolin desperately wants to make sure his Bridgeboy is safe enough to leave behind.

One surfer in particular crested an unbroken wave and glided on it for an age, his dark hair waving in the wind and his long silhouette perfectly poised on the board. Adolin didn't realise how transfixed he was, nor for how long the man surfed parallel to the shore, before the wave finally broke and he slipped into the water, out of Adolin’s line of sight.
