Summary
“I would not have John unhappy,” Mary says in the same slow, even tone she uses for the Forrester children when they fail to grasp a snippet of French vocabulary or a fact from history. “Taking him from you would make him unhappy even if he has not realised it himself.” She glances at Holmes to find him staring at her intently again. She holds his gaze. “He loves you, Mr Holmes.”
Holmes neither speaks not shifts his gaze from her eyes.
“I mean, he is in love with you, Mr Holmes.”
That clarification makes him blink at last. He gets up and walks to the window and looks out over Baker Street.
“No.” He glances back at her. “You don’t know what you’re saying.”
