Summary
“Eddie, I’m in love with you,” he says, heart thrumming in his chest, in his throat, in his mouth. He feels hot and cold and dizzy by turns.
“What?” asks Eddie faintly, barely even a question.
“I’m in love with you,” Buck says again. “I didn’t know, I didn’t mean to, but I am. I am.”
“You– Right, okay,” says Eddie, so visibly buffering that it makes Buck’s heart clench a little in his chest. Of course he’s in love with Eddie. How could he possibly have let himself pretend otherwise. “Wasn’t expecting this, bud,” says Eddie, and he sounds so shocked that Buck can’t help a wry smile. Of course Eddie’s surprised. They must be the only two people in existence who didn’t already know. “I– Buck, man, you know that I care about you, but…”
“I know,” he says gently to Eddie, because he did know, but that doesn't make this moment hurt any less.
---
Post season 8, Buck confesses his feelings, Eddie lets him down as gently as he can, and they both try to figure out how to be just friends.

Summary
Buck tries to commit the frame to memory, wills himself not to forget the important details—Eddie on his knees in front of him, his nails seeking purchase along Buck's thighs as he drinks him down, his drawn-out gasps when Buck returns the favor.
After, when Buck reaches out for quiet confirmation in the dark, asks him, "Good?"
Eddie tells him, earnest and hard-won, "Everything is good with you," and Buck can bask in the illusion of a world where he almost believes it.
Buck is trying to leave the past where it belongs. Then he wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy, convinces Eddie to join him, and falls headfirst into (not so) casual sex with his best friend.

Summary
Mr. Diaz’s eyes are so infuriatingly brown, a roasted chestnut that feels lodged in Buck's throat. In certain flickers of the candlelight, they appear hazel. Another flicker, another color. Caramel, then gold. Buck doesn’t think he’s seen eyes like his before.
“So, what do you recommend? I mean, to encourage affection,” Mr. Diaz hastily elaborates, his eyes briefly shooting over towards Mr. Han before returning to Buck, almost as if he's been caught doing something he shouldn't.
With a grin so wide his cheeks nearly hurt, Buck answers pleasantly, almost saccharinely. “Dancing. Even if one’s partner is barely tolerable.”
A flash bolts across Mr. Diaz’s face, as the recognition of his own words repeated back to him lands with a satisfying crash, his mouth parting slightly as his shoulders drop, like all air escapes him, all because of Buck.
***
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single father in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of partner.

“I have a bottle of champagne, four champagne flutes, one engagement ring to go into one of those champagne flutes, and a note to deliver it all to table 34 with dessert,” Tomas explains, wide-eyed, throwing his hand back to the prep station where said champagne is waiting on ice next to four flutes and a small ring box.
“Okay?”
“Okay so there’s two men and two women and I have no idea who’s getting proposed to. I’m not even 100% on who came with who."

Summary
Buck runs, and Eddie follows.
-----
It’s been over two months of chasing Buck across the country, from state to state to state, following a trail he suspects Buck doesn’t realize he’s dropping breadcrumbs on. If he did, Eddie worries he’d stop sending the postcards, and they’re his only clues. Buck left his phone in his apartment back in Los Angeles. If he’s gotten a new one, he hasn’t shared the number with anyone—not Maddie, not Chris, and certainly not Eddie.
So Eddie lays in a too-soft bed in a too-small cabin in the middle of bumfuck Nebraska, the first grey light of dawn creeping its fingers past the dusky pink curtains, and reads the postcard again. He knows what it says by heart, but it makes him feel a little less alone to hear Buck’s voice in his head.

“Those couldn’t’ve been cheap,” Eddie says. “Do we need to talk about your spending habits?”
Buck lets out a soft huff of laughter. “What are you, the flower police?”
“No, no,” Eddie says, shaking his head, his hair brushing against the side of Buck’s face. “If you wanna spend your hard earned money on fancy ass flowers, I’m not gonna stop you.” He nuzzles into Buck’s neck, his stubble scratching against his skin.
“It’s nice,” he says, his voice muffled. “No one’s ever bought me flowers before.”
Buck copes with unrequited love by maladaptive daydreaming, buying Eddie flowers, and lying to the farmers market vendor about his imaginary husband.

Summary
Buck shivers as he thinks back to earlier in the day, at the way Eddie snapped his name like a whip across the radio when he did exactly what Eddie and Bobby both had told him not to do. At the frosty glad to hear it, Firefighter Buckley, when Buck called dispatch back to tell Eddie he was fine if a little bruised. At the way Eddie had called him at the end of the shift, voice low and quiet and commanding, hooking deep beneath Buck’s skin and stealing the breath from his lungs until all he could manage was a rasping acknowledgment before hanging up.
It could be seconds, or minutes, or an hour more, but finally the bedroom door clicks open and—
“So you do know how to follow instructions,” Eddie says, the edge in his voice not quite sharp enough to cut but a warning nonetheless. “I was wondering.”

“You know…several of us parents get together once, maybe twice a month or so. You’re welcome to join us if you’d like. I can add you to the email chain.”
Not for the first time that day, Eddie’s surprised. It’s not that he’s opposed, more that the invitation is unexpected. He’s not particularly social—when he is it’s with the team or with Buck or with his family, all of them in each other’s houses, in each other’s lives both at work and away from it. Outside of them…
It occurs to him that he’s never really known how to make friends.

"You're right, I... I lost my son - however temporarily, and I'll never forgive myself, but if anything, I just..." Briefly, his eyes flicker down to Buck's lips. Buck can't stop himself from doing the same. He's only a man. "This isn't out of nowhere, Buck - you know that. I lost the most important person in the world to me - but..." They're leaning closer now - mostly Eddie, Buck thinks, although he certainly isn't stopping it. "...the second most important person in the world to me is right here, right now, and you're..." he trails off again, breath hot as it washes over Buck's lips, their eyes falling closed. Buck swallows. "I'd love to be more of a gentleman about this, and I mean this in the most abstract and metaphorical, and least possessive way possible, but in the spirit of not wasting any more time than we already have, Buck..." the words follow each other quickly through a single, whispered breath. "...you're fucking crazy if you think I'm letting you go on that date."
"Eddie, you think I'm going anywhere, you're fucking crazy."

“Hi Frank.”
“It’s been a while since you asked for an emergency session,” Frank says, voice even as always. “Can I ask what brought this on?”
“I think I just dumped god,” Eddie says and then he bursts out laughing. He can’t control it, he knows he sounds manic, like he’s somewhere between laughter and a breakdown, edging closer to the breakdown. “Holy shit I did dump god.”
“I’m going to need just a little more than that,” Frank says and his face looks torn between concern and amusement.

Summary
“Smells good,” Buck says, and Eddie hums. “It’s three am, you don't need to cook for me,” he ends up saying anyway.
“I’m not cooking,” Eddie points out. “I’m heating up leftovers. I made Linda’s mushroom soup last night.”
“Oh, that’s what that is?” Buck questions, immediately curious, as he takes a few steps closer, Eddie’s bicep brushing his clothed chest as he peers into the pot. As he does so, the scent only becomes stronger, wafting up into his nose. “Chris approved?” He asks, then, to which Eddie nods.
“Yeah,” he confirms. “It’s good - here,” he says, then, smoothly pulling one of the drawers out and retrieving a small spoon, which he then dips into the thick, pale soup. “It’s hot,” Eddie warns, as he turns the stove off, and brings the spoon up to Buck’s lips. Right as Buck parts his lips, Eddie hurriedly brings a hand up beneath the spoon, catching a falling drop, and in the process, the pads of his fingertips brush the underside of Buck’s chin, right as his lips close around the spoon.
(Or: Buck comes home from an extra shift, and Eddie makes him dinner.)
