It happens almost too fast for her to be afraid.
As soon as El hears the tires popping on Hopper's truck, she knows the military has caught up to them. She unlaces her arm from Mike's, and as soon as the truck jolts with impact, she rolls out of the truck, hitting the ground hard, almost exactly at the border between the Upside Down and the Right Side Up.
She wants to scream at the cruelty of it all. Just as she accepted hope, it gets ripped out from beneath her, dreams shattering like porcelain under her feet.
Kali was right. Happiness isn't how the story goes for someone like her.

Mikes' theory is wrong, but El survives the collapse of the Upside Down anyway, ending up trapped in the world where they killed Vecna less than an hour ago. Stuck in a foreign world with no way back, El wallows in misery before deciding to get revenge for Papa's program and open up another wormhole for her to come home. Because she was the one who created the Upside Down in the first place, so why can't she do it again to get back home?
And Mike, after accepting his grief for the first time in 18 months, learns there's nothing in the universe strong enough to get between El and her happy ending.

To say El was a bit of a romantic, was likely an understatement. Ever since she had been a little girl, she had been fascinated by this idea of true love, of the prince picking up the princess on a white horse, and a happily ever after with your soulmate. Now that she was in her early twenties, she of course knew that princes and princesses were mainly existing in fairytales and that no stranger would just randomly pick you up to make you his wife (kinda weird when you think about it rationally), but she had never been able to fully shake off that deep rooted wish to find the one.
This one person, that quickened your heartbeat, who shifted your world the moment you saw him, your other half, because though she knew it was rare and unlikely to find such a person, she still believed in the concept of destiny and true love.-
