Summary
He has an advantage over nearly all his forebears, in that up until two years ago he had barely cultivated at all. There were ten-year-old junior disciples who could outfight him two years ago, until his da-ge burned his collections, and sworn over the smoking ashes that he would burn more and more until Huaisang complied. Huaisang had done the math then as well, his personal misery held up against the further destruction of priceless and beautiful things, and made his decision.
Even if he considers himself a priceless and beautiful thing—a valuation he becomes less and less sure of with each passing day—the destruction of one is worth preventing the destruction of many. So after a month of mourning, he had silently picked up his saber and returned to the training fields.
Huaisang had thought his sacrifice was merely of his spirit, his happiness. Now, it turns out, da-ge had claimed his very life that day.
And he had deliberately refused Huaisang that information.

"So Cuno volunteered himself for late evening training," Harry said through the phone, still at the office. "Something to do with the horses. I think he intends to start immediately as a patrol officer once juvie training is over. He doesn't need me to stay to give him a ride or anything I just - it'll be so dark once he's done."
He gets it. Kim feels a similar pang of worry at the thought, but he also is confident that if Cuno says he would still like to walk himself home then he can handle himself. Harry has always been more of a worrier than he is, or perhaps, if Kim is being unkind to himself, Harry has a natural parent instinct within him that Kim is still learning to tune into day by day.
"So yeah, we'll be home super late. Every Wednesday. I'll make sure that we both eat a real dinner before we get home. You can make sure that C eats something besides crackers, right?" He jokes, but it's more of that Fatherly Anxiety coming through.
"I'll find something." Kim assures him. "And I won't even attempt to cook."

Nix Gottlieb has been working for the RCM for thirty-nine years - since its very inception - and never has he seen a bigger bunch of idiots than the current cohort.
You have the twin fools McLaine and Torson, who are constantly in for the stupidest things, a real revolving door. Gottlieb suspects they like the company. Then, you have McCoy, who has never met a fight he wouldn’t pick. There is Minot, who tends to hide things until it’s nearly too late. There is Kitsuragi, who is the stubbornest man Gottlieb has ever met, and there is Vicquemare, who, when he is not actively trying to die, is not working very hard to prevent it. The consultant, Heidelstam, who is worth too much for how often they let him go out on calls and get stabbed. Even the horses which Gottlieb takes care of are exceptionally stupid this year.
And then, Gottlieb sighs, you have Du Bois.
Well, at least there is never a dull moment. -

Huaisang was fairly certain he had put just one egg into his pan. He had taken out the carton, pulled out one singular egg, and cracked it into his pan before tossing the shell in the general direction of his compost bin (in this house, they remained eco-friendly). There was quite literally no way for there to be two eggs in his pan at that moment, but there they were, swimming back and forth over the surface of his cast iron pan as they sizzled and cooked through.
Huaisang sighed, blinked, and rubbed his eyes, feeling an ache begin to seep into his bones that hadn’t been there when he woke up. He looked back down at the stove.
There was only one egg in the pan.
