Summary
"I can't believe I have things to do! Might be the first time in a long while!" Filled with a new sense of task, he returns to his cave. One day turns into weeks, which turns into a month, and Sonic finally completes the first English book. Deciding it was at least a little fun, he grabs the ones for second and third grades, and gets through them faster than the first. The rush to complete the books makes him almost forget why he began studying in the first place, but he remembers when the last exercise in the third book requires a letter.
"If the book itself asks for one, that means I can write letters now!" He exclaims and whoops, then rummages his cave to find a piece of paper.

After dinner was quite literally devoured. They all helped cleaning up the table, even Tom tried to lend in a single hand. And after all that’s said was done, and Tails and Knuckles went to go do their own thing again.
Sonic, of course had to get stopped in his tracks. “Sonic, me and Tom would appreciate it if you came to meet us in our bedroom.” And with that Tom and Maddie went to their bedroom, their door just barely open.
Tom and Maddie must’ve sensed he was thinking of something, and not just something random. He bet it was Maddie and her weirdly accurate intuition skills. There was something about women and how accurate their intuition was that just scared Sonic.
So with one deep breath, he for once, walked at a normal pace into their bedroom.

Shadow’s legs move before he can stop them, barely closing the door behind him as he rushes over, kneeling in front of Sonic to be eye level with him.
He can smell a change in Sonic’s normal heart rate. His heart is racing, even more so than it usually is.
The change in scent sends signals to Shadow’s mind; old, instinctual ones. Ones he hasn’t had in a long time.
HELP HIM! his mind screams. HE’S GOING TO FAINT! ALERT HIM!
He shakes his head, mentally. Sonic doesn’t faint; at least, not that he’s seen.
Sonic’s not Maria.
And this isn’t a medical episode (to his knowledge); it’s a panic attack.
Although, Maria had had a lot of those, too.

One of the civilians got caught in the middle. Sonic rushed towards them, full of panic, and shouted at them to move. Unfortunately, he wasn't fast enough as the gun whined loudly, the laser pointed right at them. In the corner of his vision, a ball of golden fluff flew straight into the civilian, pushing them away, right as the gunshot.
His sneakers dug into the grass as he skidded to a stop. Everything went quiet. Shadow teleported to his side, both of them staring uselessly as smoke erupted from the spot that was shot.
When the cloud of smoke cleared, all they could see was a big crater that embedded itself into the battleground. Sonic slowly inched forward, ears perked at the sound of soft sniffling. He reached the edge and felt his jaw drop.
In the middle of the crater was a tiny, fluffy Tails.
Or: Sonic and Shadow struggle to take care of toddler-Tails while Eggman is busy fixing the machine that started this whole mess.
