    Upstairs, there’s a sharp, sudden clatter, followed by the predictable but no less unsettling “Fuck!” that always follows.

    Downstairs, Richie winces but fights off the instinct to run, to call out, to help however he can. They’ve gone over it so many times that he still feels the sting of Eddie’s words — “I don’t need you babying me, Rich!” — and the twinge of guilt that goes along with the memory. He grips the armrest of the couch, an anchor and a reminder.

    But then there’s a muffled thud and a refrain of “Fuck, fuck,” this time quiet and anguished, and that Richie can’t ignore.

In fact, there’s little else to do after you’ve given up on holding your own insides inside but tell yourself that if you live, you’ll actually live this time and that the echoed chanting of “clown, clown, clown, clown” had better not be the last thing you ever hear.

    After narrowly avoiding death, Eddie learns that the hardest promises to keep are the ones you make to yourself. An un-tragedy in three acts.

    It would be okay to love him forever and be in love with him forever and want him forever, even if Eddie never loved him back. Richie is realizing he’s already felt that way his entire life - he just didn’t understand that was what he was feeling. Being Eddie’s friend is already so much better than not remembering him at all. It isn’t a consolation.
