Summary
Together, John and Sherlock have quite a history, a journey, a life. The story begins post Season 4 (selective parts of it, anyway) and will move forward as they realise their desires and yearnings, as they make peace with where they have been - and where they are going.
Literal meaning: things that are desired, based on prosaic *Desiderata* by Max Ehrmann, written in 1929, encourages readers to live peacefully and honestly while staying grounded amid life's distractions. It advises maintaining dignity, avoiding bitterness, and appreciating the beauty in both the world and oneself. The poem ultimately offers a message of hope, resilience, and quiet strength.
The poem is included in its entirety is in chapter 1, with a correlating story. Subsequent chapters, grouped to tell a single story line, will incorporate a snippet of the piece.
The final chapter will include a bit of the backstory of the poem and Mr. Ehrmann's career.

Summary
Part of a larger series, the main story being Giving All. A recap as I drop you into the middle of the plot of this series: while pregnant, Mary Watson was involved in a motor vehicle accident, in which she was mortally injured and Baby Watson arrived by emergency c-section quite prematurely. Unfortunately, Mary was determined to be brain dead and, following her wishes, she became an organ donor. The baby, named Fiona, at the time of this writing remained medically fragile, on a ventilator in the NICU.
Sherlock has been keeping vigil at John's side since the trauma begin: learning about the accident, when he found out about Mary's infidelity, when the baby suffered a complication, when he heard the specifics of the organ donation process. When he said goodbye in Mary's ICU room.
This piece is very much a side-bar occurrence surrounding some specifics about John's wishes regarding Mary's funeral. And Big Brother Holmes rising to the occasion as fierce protector.

Captain Watson to the rescue! Series compliant until beginning of Season 3 - then all bets are off. Sherlock, off in Serbia, has been captured and severely injured. Mycroft recruits John to aid with freeing him and then overseeing his recovery. The story begins in London but will explode in Serbia, slide into a European hospital and then tiptoe through a safe-house before returning to Baker Street.
Part of the Fandom Trumps Hate 2024 (my very first ever), in which I am humbled and amazed - thank you to all the bidders (gulp, I wasn't sure there'd be any, let alone more than one!) and especially to Podfixx for the highest bid, the donation to a worthy organization, and for the robust, thought-provoking prompt. I hope I will do it justice. Second chance bidder, thank you as well for the bid and for your patience!

Summary
HLV, had it hewed closer to the original ACD story “The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton”:
Sherlock took a long, deep breath, scenting the air. “Claire de la Lune. Why do I know it?”
“That’s Mary’s.”
“Not Mary, somebody else.”
They continued creeping up the stairs. Halfway up, they could hear Magnussen, talking soft and fast. Even without being able to make out words, they could hear the desperation in his voice.
Then came the gunshot.
Quickly and cautiously, the men sped up the stairs and eased around a corner to where they had a clear view of the main room of the penthouse. Magnussen was clearly dead, blood and brains spattered on the carpet. As he knew he would, Sherlock saw a petite woman bending over him, blond wisps escaping her knit cap. With a soft exhalation of triumph, she fished the newsman’s keys out of his pocket.
Sherlock put his lips right up against John’s ear and breathed, “Lady Smallwood.”
Suddenly, John stiffened in shock. “No,” he whispered. Sherlock looked to see what had surprised him so, and was himself stunned into silence. For when the female assassin straightened up, her reflection was clearly visible in the window.
