  Summary

  “Rio, please.” I rub my face once more, in disbelief that he’s this determined. “Why are you even so upset by this, anyways?”

  “Why wouldn’t I be? They’re taking you away from me!” He seems to be in disbelief himself that I’d even ask such a thing. “Away from us. Away from all of this wonderful fun we’ve been having!”

  I feel that heat once more and decide to ask a question I’d been considering on and off throughout this call. “What ‘us’, Rio?”

  “Have I not made it obvious?” He darkly chuckles before lowering his voice, molasses through the line that sends a shiver through me at the dark, sickly sweet intensity. “You’re mine, Detective. Mine alone. No one else gets to hunt me. No one else gets to catch me. No one else.” He speaks breathily, directly into his phone’s microphone. I can only imagine his face as he says these things, but it still leaves me breathless. “No. One. Else. Ever.”
