You're smiling, too, now—the kind of smile that you clearly can't fight, not even while your eyes start to water and your voice is trembling. You laugh, stiffly wiping a tear from your cheek. "M'not a kid, Touya," you say, and he can feel the skin at his cheeks stretching the staples in a way that should hurt. "I'm only a couple months younger than you, remember?"
He'd called you "kid" in the last year you spent together, a gentle taunt that he'd be a teenager before you. Guess you got the last laugh, he muses, I didn't get to be a teenager at all.
He nods slowly. "Yeah, I remember," he says, "I'd never forget you." The vulnerable statement slips out before he can stop it. Thankfully, you don't leave him wondering if he's fucked up for long.
"Never?" You echo, lips parted. Your eyes scan his. Do you not believe him? I wouldn't believe me, he thinks bitterly. I'm a piece of shit. Or... are you as desperate to keep your eyes on him as he is you? Have you missed him half as badly as he's missed you?
