They stared at each other for a few minutes, drinking tea in silence neither of them wanted to break. Time stood still as they finished the treat, the howling of the wind outside enveloping the room in a comforting hue. They didn't talk, didn't move but didn't feel trapped here either. They just were, together, two women bound by shared history and divided by time for so long they had no wish of ever saying goodbye.
They were a living proof of how rapidly loss can change people.

“I’m sorry, Hiccup,” she said, making her way over to the bed and sitting down heavily. Hecate shifted slightly, adjusting her balance as the mattress moved underneath her. “Miss Cackle called asking after you, and you were asleep, and…” Pippa trailed off, the way she always did when she was uncertain about something. “I didn’t want to wake you,” she said, finally. “I thought… considering everything… that you deserved a night’s rest.”
She said nothing of the content of their conversation, though she had to know that Hecate had heard. And Hecate, for her part, had no particular desire to bring it up. She didn’t know what she would say, if she did. Thank you for standing up for like you always do, even if I’m not certain I agree with you had a rather poor ring to it.

Hecate stares down at the ring on her finger, a simple, silver band that compliments Pippa’s more ostentatious one, and tries to breathe. It can’t be. There has to be a mistake, a practical joke here somewhere. Dimity, perhaps, because she doubts Ada would go this far, not knowing what she knows about how Hecate feels, how she’s always felt— And yet Pippa is staring at her with equally wide eyes, a marriage certificate in her hands with their names clearly printed, and she needs to think, needs to breathe, needs the room to stop spinning and the voices in her head (stupid, reckless, worthless girl!) to shut up for a moment so she can make sense of any of this.

Pippa gingerly picked up the picture by her bedside. She remembered the day so vividly. Her hand had fidgeted nervously around the ring box in her pocket all evening, returning to it time and again just to reassure herself it was still there. Hecate had chalked up her distraction to fears about motion sickness on their first night on the Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner, and the usually quiet brunette had taken to describing all the activities aboard ship that they could explore over the week to preoccupy her mind. She could still remember the feeling of Hecate tracing soothing circles on the back of her hand as they stood along the deck of the ship, a light chill in the air drawing their bodies closer together as gold and red fireworks sparkled before them, and wondering whether Hecate could hear her heart thrumming with excitement in her chest.
Glancing around the dark room, emptied of Hecate’s things, her family torn apart, Pippa wondered where it had all gone wrong.

A tear rolls down Pippa’s cheek and Pippa brushes it away with impatient fingers. “It’s not that I’m not trying,” she whispers.
And Hecate thinks suddenly of her girls. Thinks of how there’s often a student or two, usually around their third year, who will suddenly start to struggle where they hadn’t ever before. Girls who stop coming to class. Or turn up with messy hair and dark eyes. She’s seen it more times than she can count.
“Pippa,” she says softly, and rises, crossing over to sit on the settee beside her. Pippa doesn’t look at her, and Hecate, risking it all, reaches over and takes her hand.
Slowly Pippa’s eyes travel the distance and come up to meet her own.
“I just hoped there was, perhaps, a potion that could fix me,” she whispers and Hecate shakes her head.
“Pippa,” Hecate breathes, squeezing her hand. “You are not broken.”

Pippa finds herself struggling. Hecate knows she isn't alone.

When Ada had suggested hosting a Yule Ball and inviting the other nearby schools, Hecate had thought it was —well, not a good idea, the squealing about boys and dresses in the middle of potions class attesting to that, but not a bad one either. She’d gone on about cross-academy cooperation and fostering community, but Hecate had already been rearranging her schedule and mentally cataloging everything they’d need to do to open the castle to everyone.
As such, she hadn’t caught the knowing glint in Ada’s eye when she requested Hecate contact Miss Pentangle’s.

Hecate turns on a heel and clenches a fist, spins and spins across the miles between Cackle’s and Pentangle’s. She doesn't know how she knows the path, only thrusts out her magic and focuses on Pippa. Pinpoints the place she can sense Pippa must exist in the material world, the mortal world, and pushes magic through the place Pippa has within her own heart. Forces the spell until she simply knows where to direct it.
She lands hard on the stone right outside what must be Pippa’s chambers, shaking as her lungs fight to expand and her cells busy to reacquaint themselves with matter. With fear. Swaying slightly, she rests a palm against the stone casing around the door, collecting her bearings until the floor stops tilting under her feet and she is able to raise a trembling fist and knock.

A mysterious and dangerous illness, hardly worse that the flu for children but deadly in the rare case it infects an adult, sweeps through Pentangle's. When Hecate learns that Pippa's been struck down by the malady she rushes to her side to keep a vigil, and she fears, say goodbye.

She wishes she could have a few more minutes alone with Pippa, at least enough to get her bearings; but it’s Pippa’s birthday, and she refuses to be selfish. Refuses to bring down Pippa’s bright mood with her own dourness and insecurities. She even does her best to smile, a small, tense lift of her lips that makes her face feel hot and her jaw clench.
