Life for a human was full of dangers when demons were lurking in the shadow, poised to strike at any moment of carelessness.
Life was even more precarious for a human maiden, who, if unfortunately captured by those vile demons, was equally at a risk of being consumed as food, or worse, being kept as their mate.

Gwen made a long, indignant sputtering sound. Merlin met her disbelieving stare with a cheeky smile. “I’m sorry, what? Lancelot’s a catch?"
Merlin shrugged. “Well, he is. He’s noble and brave and considerate and definitely not a prat. I’m just saying, if I had the opportunity…”

Summary
Merlin is sent alone, without Arthur on a mission to Northumbria to lift a curse that is killing its people. While he's gone, Merlin and Arthur exchange letters that become increasingly revealing. Missing one other seems to be the push they need to cross that line between being friends to something more.
But the situation in Northumbria soon becomes more dangerous and Merlin's life is put in danger. Arthur learns the hard way just how much he needs Merlin by his side.
