Gone was the bright, hopeful light he’d grown up with.
Gone was the anger that had once made Stan’s stomach knot.
Gone was the dejected look that had filled those eyes as the curtain had closed on their last interaction.
Stanford’s eyes were empty, sunken, devoid of all feeling. Devoid of all thought, even.
Stan had played out a billion scenarios of how Ford would respond upon seeing him.
He hadn’t accounted for the option that he… wouldn’t respond at all.

Summary
After over 30 years of running, Ford Pines is finally happy. He’s travelling the world with his brother, he doesn’t have to worry he’ll be attacked while he’s sleeping, and he’s getting three square meals a day (and snacks!). This results in him putting on some extra puppy fat, and after 8 months at sea, it’s become noticeably harder ignore. Stan says it’s no big deal, but after having the same waistline for 30 years, it comes as quite a shock to Ford, and the guilt of having let himself go starts to gnaw at him.

Gravity was trying to pull you to the center of the earth, sweet things tasted good but made your teeth fall out and your body rebel against you, and Dipper could see dead people.

The cryo chamber opened. The pseudo-Dipper dropped to its knees as it thawed, shuddering from the cold.
"Careful." Ford knelt next to the shapeshifter and tentatively touched its shoulder. "Are you alright?"
"I'm..." Its voice was rough and guttural; it feigned clearing its throat and said, "I'm—fine now. Thanks for letting me out, man. I guess I must've fallen in and got stuck." It was trying to sound like Dipper. Someone a kindly human rescuer wouldn't think twice about helping get outside.
"You can drop the act," Ford said, then forced himself to soften his voice; he was giving the shapeshifter permission, not a command. "I know you're Shifty."
Shifty jerked its head up. It gave Ford a nervous smile. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Ford sighed. "You insist you're a normal teenage human boy?" he asked. At Shifty's emphatic nod, he said, "Well, that's unfortunate, because I came down here to set a shapeshifter free."

Thirty years of almost nightly work on a portal that refused to obey their and Stan's commands, no matter what they did. Thirty years since the start of the Mystery Shack and Shifty's alter ego, the unlikeable co-manager of said Shack. Hope is starting to wear thin, and frustration is running high.
But when a pair of twins begin to stumble upon the mysteries of the town, there might be something left to find after, be they solutions or secrets. Secrets that might as easily destroy Shifty as they could save them.
