He was taught to never get attached, that love was weakness. He was ok with being the villain. His grandfather taught him well.
He lived by these rules for so long, that when a hero came and wrecked every single one of them, what could he do but fall?
The least he could do is die protecting the one he loved. He was destined to have a tragic end.
And yet, Hiccup saw fit to break that rule too.

The day after the events of Triple Cross, Hiccup wakes up in his hut back on the Edge. He receives a letter supposedly from his father about wanting to meet up in a remote location and an odd sense of deja vu hits him. Didn’t he already do this? Wasn’t this what started his brief alliance with Viggo? The same Viggo that sacrificed himself to save Hiccup?
Perhaps it was all just a vivid dream?
He decides to follow the steps he remembers taking and becomes more and more confused as everything seemingly lines up exactly like it was before right down to Viggo’s sacrifice. When Hiccup wakes up back at the start of everything once more, he decides to take advantage of this strange situation to try to save Viggo. He doesn’t get it on the first try, nor the next or the next or even after that. It turns out to be a lot harder to achieve than he ever expected it to be.

- during bandomeer, xanatos performs some ritual which gets an ancient sith "genet" to possess obi-wan's body, but genet is mostly invested in fucking around and teaching obi-wan so far so he's kind of an ally
- obi wan goes back to the jedi, then to melida/daan and qui-gon never comes back so once cerasi dies he leaves, and gets captured by slavers, and gets sold to death watch.
- he's part of a death watch camp where he acts as a caretaker to all the children, who include cal and trilla. jango is captured and held there.
- draye vizsla arrives at camp and is exposed to the horrors of kyr-tsad, and starts fanning the flames of revolution, getting the house to no longer support tor.
- arla is brought to camp to torture jango. she is then send to find the darksaber, and takes obi-wan with her to help. they become friends. they end up on an evil sith planet, where a scared acolyte attempted to cleave fear from the force, because he was tired of being scared. this created a recursive loop of death, absence, and pain. obi wan met a nameless sith, his name something akin to snow once. that sith was connected to fear. he attempted to manipulate obi-wan into giving his life to lessen the suffering of the planet by some thousand years; instead, obi-wan undid the recursion loop, healed the planet, and now has the ability to pull on fear.
- arla and obi-wan part ways, with arla going to the jedi temple for healing. obi-wan returns to the death watch camp to get the kids out, bring the darksaber with him, and they plan a break-out, however everything goes wrong as a rival kyr'tsad faction want to bring tor the darksaber for personal glory.
- also, draye took cal with her to meet with house mereel as part of 'house vizsla no longer stands with tor.'
- obi-wan sent out a broadcast to tor that he and the kids were hidden with the darksaber in an abandoned temple/forge near the camp, in order to draw a hope of escape to him. because whilst he can defend a temple, he isn't capable of taking a camp and keeping it, so this is tactical.
- meanwhile, mereel and draye and house kryze are all converging, partially to save jango and partially to save obi-wan.
- obi-wan and the survivors are hanging on. obi-wan might be going insane.
