Summary
Octavius was a good soldier, but never a good man. Goodness was impossible when survival was all that mattered : how to fight, how to endure, how to carve his place in a world that only valued the strengths of a soldier. These were important. Fairness, in retrospect, was not.
But war does not end when the battle is over. Blood washes away but guilt lingers. His hands remember what they were made for —anger, violence, ruin. And unsteady as they are now, he finds they are incapable of tenderness. It does not come as a surprise. Love was never his to hold, not without breaking it in the process.
