“Maybe loyalty is a kind of patience. Like hope. A holding pattern for the heart, while we wait for change.”
Marianne needed a change. Teaching in a country prep school for a year, as it turned out, would change pretty much everything.

Summary
five times héloïse and marianne don’t know/can’t admit they’re in love with each other & the one time they do.
alternatively: the plotless, accidentally domestic, childhood best friends modern au that literally nobody asked for.

“Who are you?” Héloïse asks, feeling the sand crunching inside her shoe. The girl is taller than she had imagined, Héloïse having to tilt her head back to look at her.
“Marianne,” the girl says. She barely cracks a smile, just an enigmatic quirk of her lips.

Summary
The art world is being turned on its head as Marianne Bonheur arrives in Paris in the spring of 1907. At its heart is the house at the rue de Fleurus with its Saturday salons hosted by Brigitte Abiatti and great collection of contemporary art curated by her younger sister, Héloïse de Montfort.

Summary
Eight years later.
"To bid goodbye, is to say, ‘I must put you into God’s hands, since I can no longer hold you in mine.’ A goodbye is a capitulation to forces bigger, stronger than ourselves, than our wills, our desires. It is a surrender, of someone dear, to the questionable mercies of the world. One quite literally gives them up.” She sipped at her wine. “Goodbyes are shattering, and devastating, and holy. And life is full of them. Do not try to make them easy. Far better to make them worthwhile."

Summary
Lives and lives and lives, jumbled together like discarded christmas lights, flickering on and off at random until she’s sure that her brain can’t hold any more. She and Marianne are happy, sometimes, when the fates line up just right. Once they live their lives on an island, in a tiny village, and they raise their own goats. In another, they grow tulips and everything smells of flowers, always. Sometimes, no, not so happy.
Héloïse remembers. Marianne doesn't.

Summary
…she had regained what I thought she had lost forever, the magical sadness which had drawn me to her, the thwarted look that had seemed to say, “Surely I was made for some other purpose than this?”
—Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited
This was a response to a half-jokey tumblr prompt for a late 18th-Century fanfic on Marianne x Hélöise. Post-canon. Faithful to the world of the film.
August 1, 1794
It is five years after the French Revolution and nearly two years into the new Republic. The king and queen are dead. Marat is dead. Robespierre is dead. The Terror is over but the “women’s clubs” that the Jacobins outlawed remain shuttered. The price of bread is beginning to stabilize.
Marianne has found accommodation in this new order and is still gainfully employed as a painter. She has maintained this largely by being politically flexible with the leaders of competing factions in the National Convention.
Work is work. She still takes on a small number of pupils out of an atelier on rue du Chaume (now the rue des Archives), in what was the aristocratic Marais. The neighborhood is going through what we would now call a bit of transition.

"I like being on my own."
"Only, you might not be on your own."
Ominous! It got Marianne leaning in despite herself. "What do you mean?"
"There's a ghost. Everyone knows. They call her The Lady in White. A poltergeist."
It's 2019 and Marianne arrives at a remote house for a few weeks of peace and quiet. Héloïse has been trying to find some peace a lot longer.
