Summary
His mind drifts to the morning's violence, to the end of it and Ser Duncan's wails. He'd been near unrecognizable except for the ice chip of his one open eye, bruised and battered like the rest of them. The milk of poppy distances him from his emotions, even with as little as he had consumed, so his thoughts slip like silk over the complex landscape of the tragedy to settle on something more pleasant.
Ser Duncan himself.

Summary
Seeing him is like living again in ignorance. A time before his world became Fractured – both metaphoric and literal. Seeing him is remembering there was once a time when he thought he could be happy, where he could be happier than anyone else. Seeing him is like the clouds of his life blowing away – like everything he learned 60 years ago was a lie and he can go back to those days where nothing mattered except the sound of keys composing a new melody combined with the sounds of pencil scratching across a journal.
Seeing him is impossible, Verso thinks, because his Gustave died 60 years ago – left to a heartbreaking fate because Verso could not tell him the tragic truth of their world.
Or: Before the Fracture, Verso Dessendre and Gustave were inevitable. When their world split apart, Verso believed Gustave to have died in the aftermath. Why, then, is Gustave alive in Lumière far after his date of Gommage?

Summary
After the events at Stone Wave Cliffs, Gustave awakens in a liminal space suspended between canvas and reality where a faceless child paints without end. What begins as an intellectual puzzle Gustave cannot abandon gradually transforms into something else entirely: the stubborn effort to save his sister’s life and the fragile canvas she sustains, while also proving—patiently, against every layer of refusal—to a man who has long ceased to believe in his own worth that he is permitted, perhaps even deserving, to have a real, finite life.
