After he agreed to help, it took several weeks for Eddie to notice that Chen Yi was not okay.
Eddie's only selfish concern was whether Chen Yi was really in love with him or whether it was a hallucination. He was so absorbed in these thoughts and attempts to shake out confirmation of his hopes from Bai Zong Yi that he simply did not attach any importance to all these little things.
A jacket thrown on the sofa. Untreated wounds. Subordinates cower in fear. Dirty dishes in the sink, an empty fridge, a wrinkled T-shirt, and three coffee mugs growing mold on the table.

Mike didn't look flustered. He just turned the block around, showing Will the elegant wood-burning. “Spank me. It says, ‘Spank me.’”
Will exhaled a breath, his face feeling like it was on fire. “Right. Yeah. Like I said... they have stuff like that on there. Which is why I said I didn’t want to play.”
Mike looked at the block, then back at Will, a challenge rising in his eyes. “Who cares? Build the tower.”

“Does it need to be like ceramics last semester? Do I need to drop you off and pick you up at the door again like a fucking preschooler?” Will shakes his head as best as he can, a whimper escaping from his lips. Mike grips his jaw tighter. “Speak.”
“N-no, Mike.” Yes, actually, Will wants to say. He liked it when Mike did that last semester, walking him to and from class like Will’s big, scary guard dog. Sometimes, if Will was lucky, Mike would wait in the hallway during his class, clutching some mass market paperback, spine cracked and curled in on itself. Even big, scary guard dogs have owners, Will would think as Mike stayed put for him.
In which someone asks for Will’s number and it makes Mike murderously angry.

The words are soft, like a confession Will wasn’t supposed to share. Like he’s telling Mike a secret, hushed into his ear in Castle Byers when they were ten.
“What?” Mike swallows.
“Y’know, leading. When you sound worried…it’s like you care.”
“I do care, Will.” Mike doesn’t know what to say. “You’re my best friend.”
OR; dorming with Will at university is killing Mike and he has no way of coping with it. Until he does.
