This was excellent, excellent, excellent. At the level I'd hope to find in a good old fashioned published science fiction book. Putting the suffering animal to sleep. The only down side is if aliens ever really appear this will not help me sleep better!
If I might be so bold, following up on a question above, might Rannow have confirmation that Earth hears the conversation? Perhaps they tell her it will be transmitted if she accepts mercy now? In my own writing I'm learning not to overthink details when a small gain bogs down the big story - perhaps this is that for you, which is cool. But the wondering if Earth would know the truth was the one 'loose end' I felt at the end.
Again, fantastic story.
