Before he could even flinch, a massive, gloved hand filled his vision, Akechi’s warped face regarding him with a possession he’s never seen on him in his life. “Though, who am I to deny ownership of a new toy?”
Really, Ren should’ve known something was up the second they confirmed Akechi’s third keyword as beanstalk.

After giving himself as hostage to the cognitive ruler of Akechi Goro's palace, Ren's biggest concern is distracting him long enough for his thieves to form a plan, hopefully getting them and himself out of this castle, alive.
It'd be a lot easier if Akechi's shadow wasn't so honest.

Ren yelps as Akechi jostles him, his hands scrabbling for purchase on the smooth glass. He sets him on his desk, ever so slightly out of reach. He wants to yell back up to Akechi, to ask him what the hell he’s doing to such a poor, defenseless creature. He’s stuck trying to decide which knife of his three to pull when he notices Akechi is—
Ren gasps. Akechi’s ignoring him. Again.

Ren Amamiya is a borrower. A tiny, magical creature, only about four inches tall. He's confident in his role as the specialist little guy on the planet. All of his friends agree!
Well—almost everyone. Too bad one particular human is being more of a prick today than usual. Too bad he's leaving Ren to suffer the torture of being ignored.
Too bad Ren still doesn't know how to tell his target he might want to be more than friends.

The warmth stills. Above him—no, surrounding him, voice reverberating like a clap of thunder, Amamiya asks, “Goro?”
Goro’s digs his fingers into Amamiya's chest. Amamiya darts through the crowd—and that’s his hand, isn’t it, squishing Goro into his chest like he’s an unruly cat? This isn’t right. He should be dead, rotting on a ship in the cognitive remains of Tokyo, not—whatever this is.
Why is he so small? What the fuck is going on?

To Goro, some things were to be expected in Maruki's realty. Seeing the residents of Tokyo be lobotomized? Sure. Seeing a dead woman resurrected and realizing he might be the same? Why not. Having the madman try to convince him to give into the delusion? Of fucking course.
What isn't expected is waking up in Ren Amamiya's palms, shrunk to a fraction of his original height. What isn't expected is having to fix this situation while barely being able to pick up a pencil. What isn't expected is the strange, terrifying vulnerability Maruki's forced him to display, and the consequences of going without the mask he's worn all his life.

He did sometimes wonder what those big machines were for, though. They didn’t seem like normal hospital equipment, since he only ever saw them in this room, and on the odd occasion he’d gotten a good enough vantage point to see inside they looked like they had humans in them. He’d given up on getting any answers from the hospital staff that occasionally visited the strange room, too—they never said anything, and never left out any notes or documents that might tell him something, either.
Oh well. No need to worry about it. In the grand scheme of Takumi Sumino’s life, whatever the humans were doing in here was thoroughly not his problem, anyway.
…or so he thought. Much to Takumi’s dismay, it seemed that the unknown purpose of the strange room actually was his problem, and the worst kind of problem at that: the kind that upended the comfortably boring, routine life he’d established for himself and threw his entire world into chaos.

Horrid. Retched. Disgusting. Revolting. Hideous.
Those were just a few words that Eito would use to describe all of humanity. Not that he would ever utter those words out loud to any of the filthy monsters in the world. After all, he was forced to associate with them to survive. He had to keep his composure in order to carry out his plan.
He had thought that he would go through the rest of his life in his mental solitude, after being adopted into a new family where he would be able to sequester himself away from prying eyes. But never in his wildest dreams did he imagine what he would encounter in that new home. Or how the small, borderline helpless humanoid creature would somehow carve a special place into his soul and heart.
