A near-canon AU, jumping off from the end of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, if Jemma hadn't been swallowed by the monolith.
After going out on their first date just after the showdown between S.H.I.E.L.D. and Jiaying, Fitz and Simmons have watched their longtime friendship blossom into romance. Jemma is sure everything is going well -- until Fitz begins stealing off to an unknown location in the base at all hours of the day and night, then deflecting all of her questions about where he's going or what he's doing.
Surely having Daisy help her figure out what Fitz is up to couldn't possibly go wrong. (Could it?)

Summary
Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons are CEOs of competing labs in New York City, each of them approaching their jobs from completely different perspectives. They are bitter rivals. Unknown to either of them, they are both also avid players of an augmented reality mobile game called Exiken, and they've been corresponding with each other behind the pseudonyms the game provides them.
They're competing for the Orion Foundation grant, money that Jemma needs to support a huge expansion she's undertaking at Simmtech, and money that Fitz desperately needs to keep his own company, TRC, afloat.
Their online lives and real lives surely have to collide at some point, when they live mere blocks apart and their competition for the grant pits them against each other.

Meet Cute, a show that could have been mindless hiatus-filler, promises weeks of effortless chemistry mixed with surprising emotional twists. In a throwback to old Hollywood, leads Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons trade biting snark and witty banter, but with a decidedly modern sensibility.
As part of the experimental conceit of the series, each episode features entirely new characters and a new premise, with one coherent running thread — the leads meet and fall in love each week. In a further nod to Coulson's paradigm-transcending concept, every character on the show is named after the actor who plays them.
Jemma Simmons (Nothing Personal) is a surprising standout as lead, showcasing her versatility and effortless emotional range. Starring opposite is Leo Fitz, known best for his well performed turns in the short-lived series Yes Men, Chaos Theory, and Watchdogs, who shines as Jemma's romantic foil. Together, they bring a spot-on, electric chemistry that seems to transcend the confines of the small screen, stunning enough that fans are already starting to refer to them as “Fitzsimmons”.

Slightly AU -- Zephyr One is not captured by Hydra at the end of Paradise Lost. Instead, the team returns to the Playground, where they interrogate Giyera. When S.H.I.E.L.D. discovers that Fitz and Simmons are needed by Hive for the next stage in Its plan, they are evacuated in the dead of night, hidden in a motel room in the middle of nowhere.
Fitzsimmons, being Fitzsimmons, use the time to debate quantum physics. Or, more precisely, Jemma works up the courage to ask Fitz about time, space, and inevitability.

When there's a mishap that puts the lab into lockdown and sends Fitzsimmons to the safety of the lab's isolation room, Jemma gets some valuable time to reflect on the state of her relationship with Fitz.

Simmons decides to help him tackle it the way they would anything else: together.
